In spite of recording a fall for the second year in a row, official abortion figures for last year reveal that the number of abortions in New Zealand has, in fact, increased by 57 per cent since 1990.
Statistics New Zealand announced that a total of 17,530 induced abortions were performed in the December 2005 year, compared with 18,210 in 2004.
Moran said the tables of statistics released showed 15,252 abortions were performed on fetuses 12 weeks and younger, at a cost of NZ$750 each; and 2279 were on fetuses over 12 weeks, at NZ$1400 each.
