 MENHIR
The heart of the collection is represented by 40 monoliths (menhir), dating back to the pre-nuragic age, some of which are very big in size.
Menhir are coarse monoliths, with several sets of breasts, sometimes with eyes and mouths, or non iconic (with no marks), smooth, symbolising the phallus.

Menhir is derived from the Breton _men_, a stone, and _hir_, long; similarly dolmen is from _dol_, a table, and _men_, a stone.
One of these, 330 feet in diameter with an outstanding menhir, is known as "Long Meg and her Daughters." Another, the Mayborough Circle, is of much the same size, but consists of a tall monolith in the centre of a rampart formed entirely of rather small water-worn stones.
The most westerly, that of Menec, consists of eleven lines of menhirs and a cromlech, the total number of stones standing being 1169, the tallest of which is 13 feet in height.

These invaders were the creators of the menhirs, the earliest of which were possibly phallic symbols worshipped by an ancient fertility cult.
When the seafaring people known as the Torréens (after the towers they built on Corsica) conquered Filitosa around 1300 BC, they destroyed most of the menhirs, incorporating the broken stones into the area of dry-stone walling surrounding the site's two Torri or towers, examples of which can be found all over the south of Corsica.
Straight ahead, the Torréen central monument comprises a scattered group of menhirs on a circular walled mound, surmounted by a dome and entered by a corridor of stone slabs and lintels.

The last theory is substantiated by the fact that the weapons carved onto the bodies depicted match those of nearby civilizations, not the people of Filitosa or its surroundings.
