		From 1985 to 1995, I was the volunteer trail maintainer along the Staunton River Trail in the Central District of Shenandoah National Park.
		By the beginning of 1995, the Staunton River Trail was one of the best maintained trails in the park, and I was very pleased with the progress that had been accomplished.
		The Staunton River Trail is located at the foot of Jones Mountain on the north side.

	Staunton Scenic River Tour

		The name "Staunton" is said to originate from Captain Henry Staunton, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, who earlier was in command of a company of soldiers organized to patrol the river valley from the mountains to the mouth of the Dan to protect the early white settlers from the incursions of the Indians.
		When Capt. Staunton and his men were patrolling the river, a young girl named Mary Crawford who lived at the white settlement near Hurt in Pittsylvania County was stolen by the Indians and taken to their camp near Smith Mountain.

		The sound of the steamboat whistle on the river was the signal for large crowds of people to turn out and watch the boat come in for a landing.
		The objective was to improve key sections of rivers which flowed from isolated parts of the country, down to railway crossings.
		A boiler said to have come from one of Bruce's boats was excavated at the steamboat landing in Staunton River Battlefield State Park in 1999 by the Peter Francisco Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia.

		The lady of the house told Union forces that 10,000 Confederates were dug in on the opposite side of the river.
