Staurikosaurus was a little theropod from the Middle Triassic, 231 to 225 million years ago - specifically the Carnian age.
Although its teeth and posture suggest it was a carnivore, some paleontologists favor to classify Staurikosaurus as a sauropod like the later Diplodocus due to its prosauropod-like skeleton.
Newer research seems to corroborate that Staurikosaurus and the related Eoraptor and Herrerasaurus are definite theropods and evolved after the sauropod line had tear from theropoda.

Known from a single specimen from Southern Brazil, Staurikosaurus was a small theropod from the Middle Triassic, 231 to 225 million years ago, and is one of the earliest dinosaurs.
At some two metres in length, 80 and weighing just thirty kilograms, Staurikosaurus was dwarfed by the theropods that were to come later.
It remains equivocal whether it was a sauropod or a true therpod, though more recent research supports it was a theropod.

Staurikosaurus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There exists only a single specimen of Staurikosaurus ("Lizard of the Southern Cross"), recovered from the Santa Maria formation in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil.
At just two metres in length, 80 cm tall and weighing just thirty kilograms, Staurikosaurus was tiny in comparison to later theropods like Megalosaurus.
Although its teeth and posture suggest it was an omnivore, some paleontologists prefer to classify Staurikosaurus as a sauropod like the later Diplodocus due to its prosauropod-like skeleton.

Spondylosoma is tentatively referred to the Rauisuchidae because, as indicated by the ventrolaterally directed sacral ribs, the ilium was held obliquely (and not vertically as in the Poposauridae).
Staurikosaurus pricei (Carnian, Upper Triassic), one of the oldest dinosaurs, possesses autapomorphies of Dinosauriformes, Dinosauria, Saurischia, and Herrerasauridae, but it retains certain plesiomorphic characters (subcircular distal end to tibia, ?proximally placed deltopectoral crest, axially unshortened neural spine to sacral 1, ?scapular spine unreduced distally) not present in Herrerasaurus (Carnian, Ischigualasto Formation, Argentina).

It is probably related to Kischlat and Barbarena's (1999) statement Staurikosaurus is only distantly related to Herrerasaurus, due in part to the lack of a trochanteric shelf.
If Staurikosaurus is a sauropodomorph, Herrerasauridae becomes the same as Saurischia or Eusaurischia (depending on where you place Herrerasaurus), and would probably be redefined.

The Herrerasauridae are an early group represented by Herrerasaurus, which was discovered in a wonderful middle-late Triassic period fossil locality (the famous Ischigualasto Formation) in Argentina in the 1970s.
Another herrerasaur is Staurikosaurus, which has been known since the 1960s from remains found in Brazil.
More recently (in 1993), another herrerasaur-like fossil was found in the same general area and named Eoraptor, or "dawn thief." It appears to be closely related to the herrerasaurs, but smaller in size and slightly older.
