 Titanium in staurolite
Staurolite is well known for its yellow color and moderate pleochroism, which follows the scheme Z yellow, Y pale yellow, and X virtually colorless.
The color intensity of the rim is indistinguishable from that of the {l10} sector of the primary staurolite.
Applied to staurolite with Z = c, Y = a and X = b, it implies that the Fe-Ti vector has a large component parallel to c, a smaller component parallel to a, and a near zero component parallel to b.

Staurolite that is not a relic in andalusite is rimmed by large muscovite porphyroblasts that overgrow the main foliation (Figure 10e).
In this sample, staurolite and andalusite porphyroblasts are anhedral and poikiloblastic with straight inclusion trails, that are oriented parallel to the main schistosity in andalusite, and obliquely oriented in the staurolite.
Staurolite porphyroblasts are several millimetre in size, commonly rimmed by coarse new muscovite, cordierite forms large centimetre-sized porphyroblasts with abundant inclusions of ilmenite, and in places muscovite.

In the less pelitic horizons of this zone, staurolite is however absent and the mineral assemblage remains the same as for the garnet zone.
Staurolite growth is thus either syn- or post-tectonic with respect to the burial of the HHCS below the TH.
Garnet is frequently found as inclusions within the staurolite poikiloblasts which indicates that the rock from the staurolite zone first underwent garnet zone metamorphic conditions (Fig 5.14).

Staurolite is a neosilicate mineral that is generally reddish-brown to fl in color.
Common in metamorphic rocks, such as quartzite, staurolite often forms in such a way that its prismatic crystals are twinned, giving them the appearance of a cross.
Due to this unusual manifestation, the mineral has been revered as a good luck charm since antiquity when it was referred to as lapis crucifer, or cross stone.

Within the staurolite + andalusite zone of metamorphism at the western edge of the map sheet (Figure 51) the typical mineral assemblage in pelitic rocks is muscovite-biotite-quartz- oligoclase-staurolite-andalusite.
Where sillimanite occurs in the quartz veins, it can usually be found in minute amounts within biotite grains in the host schist, indicating that the grade of metamorphism is actually slightly higher than is suggested by megascopic occurrences of the critical indicator minerals in hand specimen.
In places, fresh staurolite forms large (1 to 2 cm long) twinned porphyroblasts, and andalusite occurs as large poikiloblasts up to 4 cm in diameter, engulfing all other phases.

Because it would be called the Staurolite isograd for one group of rocks, but the Biotite isograd for another, and because Staurolite would occur in some rocks below the isograd and in other rocks only above the isograd, it would soon become very confusing.
In this case, with increasing temperature, Staurolite becomes unstable and reacts to produce Garnet, Biotite and Kyanite.
Note that for this reaction the disappearance of staurolite also coincides with the appearance of Kyanite in rocks of composition x and y.

The natural weathering of staurolite: crystal-surface textures, relative stability, and the rate-determining step
Etch pits on naturally weathered staurolites are disk-shaped, extensive parallel to (010), and thin perpendicular to (010).
Staurolite weathers very slowly relative to most other silicate minerals; this may be due to presence of stable kyanite-like "ribbons" in the staurolite structure or to the low site-energy of the Fe-site in the staurolite structure (compared to other orthosilicates).
The capacity of staurolite to form protective surface layers around itself in most weathering environments is apparently limited by its slow weathering, which prevents the release of product-forming elements (especially Ai) at rates sufficient to produce local supersaturation with respect to secondary minerals.

Often known as “Fairy Stones” or “Fairy Crosses”, Staurolite intrigues collectors because it naturally occurs in the shape of a cross.
Staurolite is reddish-brown, brown and fl in color, and it is found in Brazil, UK, France, Switzerland and U.S.A. While, genuine specimens are rare (copies are common due the popularity of their crystals), real Staurolite can be determine by its ability to scratch glass.
Faceted Staurolites are extremely rare because it is unusual to find crystals that are both light colored and large enough to be faceted.
