Derbyshire is a small county, landlocked in the middle of England.
An idea of the value of land at the end of the reign of Henry II is given by a valuation for Anker de Frecheville: he held lands at Staveley, Woodthorpe and Whitwell where 10 bovates (1 bovate = 10 acres) of land were valued at 10s:sq.
Lucifer matches had not reached Whitwell at that time — ‘they were nasty, dangerous, stinking things!’ She also recalled how awed she once was, when -'in the darkness of the night a solemn procession headed by torchlight bearers, passed by her father's house.

Chesterfield Canal Trust - official website
This festival can justly celebrate the reopening of the canal from Shireoaks to Kiveton Park, the new Mill Green Wharf Extension and the ongoing progress in the planning and campaigning for the full restoration of the "missing link" from Staveley to Kiveton.
It is a motto which could well apply to the Chesterfield Canal itself: the last festival held at Tapton Lock in 2002 celebrated the removal of the final blockage to through navigation on the five mile length from Chesterfield to Staveley.
Further, in this section we have to face the vexed question of the cross regional funding of restoration; the major and costly engineering works will fall in South Yorkshire and the majority of economic benefit will accrue in Derbyshire.

The river enters the Borough of Rotherham pretty much at the point where the boundaries of Sheffield, Rotherham and Derbyshire all meet near the nature reserve south of Rother Valley Country Park (a former open cast site).
Although the river is deeply embanked at Catcliffe there was still serious flooding here a few years ago when the floodwaters of the Rother backed up through the drains.

We focus on the controversy over what should be done with the Chesterfield Canal, which runs for 46 miles through North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire.
It starts at Chesterfield and passes through the towns of Staveley, Killamarsh, Worksop and Retford before ending at West Stockwith on the River Trent.
Volunteers from the Chesterfield Canal Trust, who have been working to restore the canal, want to excavate a way through the debris of the fallen tunnel so that boats can pass along the whole 46 mile length for the first time in almost a century.
