Stavelot was the seat of the Principality of Stavelot-Malmedy, a small independent region of the Holy Roman Empire, ruled by the abbots of Stavelot.
The binding of the Stavelot Bible, and the remaining fragments from the retable at Stavelot are among the highpoints of medieval art.
The Principality of Stavelot and Malmedy was abolished in 1795.

In 1815 the treaty of Vienna broke up the Stavelot principality, giving half to Prussia and half to the Netherlands.
Only the tower of the old Benedictine abbey remains, and the shrine of St Remade is preserved in the parish church.

The road from Stavelot passes under railroad tracks as it nears Trois Ponts, then veers sharply to the south, crosses the Ambleve, continues through the narrow valley for a few hundred yards, and finally turns west at right angles to cross the Salm and enter the main section of the small village.
