2003 Response to Xarhakos Parliamentary Question by Dr. George Nakratzas
Xarhakos refers to the oppressed Greek minority in Turkey, while in the case of Greece he speaks of a Muslim minority.
Xarhakos is unaware, or again pretends to be unaware, of the facts concerning the development and present situation of the Macedonian minority in Greece and its political party, the Rainbow Party.
Xarhakos is of the opinion that in addition to being a composer - an area in which he has undoubted skills - he is also a linguist, venturing so far as to question the existence of an entire language.

The theme for The Lotus Eaters was not an original composition: it is called "Ta Trena Pou Fyghan" and was a track from "Hellespontus", an LP of music by Stavros Xarhakos.
It was released as a single by Columbia in 1973 by the Stavros Xarhakos Orchestra with a "Greek Version" of the theme (by Stella and Bambos) on the B side.

New version of Epitaphios   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
When Ritsos’s poem “Epitaphios” was first put to music about five decades ago, it exploded onto the music scene and had a greater effect on the country’s political life than any other musical composition.
Xarhakos’s rewriting of the piece was so important that Theodorakis himself suggested the composition be called “Stavros Xarhakos: Theodorakis’s Epitaphios.” Xarhakos didn’t use a symphony orchestra but instead chose the State Orchestra of Greek Music, with vocalist Maria Soultatou revealing previously remote aspects of “Epitaphios.”
Xarhakos created continuity by bringing out the work’s thematic unity.

The role of Maestro Xarhakos went beyond the bounds of an orchestra director and approached those of the musician, the composer, the arranger and the interpreter.
His uninterrupted and almost mystical atten-tion to and the intense emotional binding with the performance of each of the 13 musicians were obvious proof of the majesty called Stavros Xarhakos.
In this sense, a concert by Stavros Xarhakos and the State Orchestra of Hellenic Music in the city called ‘the Athens of America' awakens the melodies in our collective memory." This is what Mr.

The issue of the reopening of the Theology School in Halki is placed within the framework of the abolition of any stipulation that blocks the freedom of expression, conscience and religion including education.
The above are stressed in the response issue d by the EU Council of Ministers to a question made by Greek Euro-deputy Stavros Xarhakos, elected with the right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy.
Xarhakos pointed out that for 30 years the Theology School in Halki is closed, while the EU does not pressure Turkey in an effective way to make it respect the religious freedoms.

No operatic popmosities here, but the sureness and strengh of a trained voice doing full justice to a collection of infectiously melodic songs, ranging from the dreamily sensual to the playfully rugged, which seem to have an element of the operatic in them.
