STAYMAN WINESAP was a seedling of Winesap raised in 1866 by Dr. J.
Stayman of Leavenworth, Kansas, and was introduced in 1895 by Stark Bros. In Virginia, it is often called just Stayman, and at one time, was a major commercial dessert variety in the state, especially in the Valley.
Stayman is a triploid that requires a pollinator and is a poor pollinator for other varieties.

 Stayman Convention
One form of the Stayman convention is known as the Non-Forcing Stayman Convention.
The non-forcing element of this version of the Stayman convention refers to the fact that if, after the No Trump opener answers the 2 Club bid and the responder bids a new suit on the Two Level, the No Trump opener is not required to continue the bidding.
This version is played exactly the same as the Non-Forcing Stayman convention, except for the fact that the opener may not pass a rebid by responder on the Two Level.

 Stayman Convention
In contract bridge, the Stayman convention is a convention used to find a four-four trump fit in a major suit after someone opens the bidding with a bid of 1 No Trump.
By using the Stayman convention the responder takes control of the bidding since a description of the opener's hand is already known within a limited range.
Jacoby transfers are often used to complement Stayman.

 Simple Stayman
Stayman is a bid that asks partner a question but which guarantees nothing about the hand.
All teach that Stayman can, in addition to it's normal use, be used to rebid a weak club suit without any suggestion that it might be unusual.
If it is intended that Stayman must promise a four card major, as seems to be the case, then the Policy should say so rather than just refer to the nebulous "Simple" Stayman.

The remainder of the memo is concerned with " extra " uses of Stayman, and revolve around a weak 12-14 opening no trump (which is what the majority of our club members use).
A common use of Stayman is when your partner opens 1NT and the next opponent passes and you, yourself, have very few points but possess a five card and a four card major.
Many pairs play Stayman as the start of a rescue bid when they have a long club suit and little else.

 Non-Forcing Stayman
The idea of a non-forcing Stayman sequence is rather a misnomer, since the 1 No Trump bidder is forced to respond.
The concept is that the Stayman convention occurs on the two level.
It is also possible that the agreement is that a Minor suit rebid by the responder after a Stayman response in a Major suit by the No Trump bidder can be considered to signify support in that particular Major suit and the start of a slam try.

Puppet Stayman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In contract bridge, Puppet Stayman is a variation of the Stayman convention which serves two purposes:
After 1NT by opener, responder starts by bidding 2 clubs just as in the standard Stayman convention.
Note that opener has denied a 5-card major and has denied a 4-card heart suit by not raising hearts after responder bid 2S, but opener's bidding has not revealed anything about whether he has a 4-card spade suit as he would have had to do in a standard Stayman auction.
