 Career Spotlight: Biomedical Engineering -
Biomedical engineering is something of a hybrid, bringing together expertise from other engineering disciplines, such as chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering, to solve biology and healthcare problems.
Even as enrollments in other engineering disciplines remain relatively steady, undergraduate biomedical engineering enrollments are increasing rapidly, according to the Engineering Workforce Commission of the American Association of Engineering Societies.
Even today, students interested in biomedical engineering may be able to pursue a bachelor's degree in another engineering discipline and then seek a master's or doctoral degree in biomedical engineering.

 Modelling of Fluidized Bed Reactors
Joachim Werther and Ernst-Ulrich Hartge (2003) "Modelling of Fluidized Bed Reactors," International Journal of Chemical Reactor Engineering, Vol.
The calculations reveal that it may take months until a quasi steady state of the bed particle size distribution is obtained.
The competing influences of attrition of the catalyst particles and efficiency of the solids recovery lead to the establishment of a catalyst particle size distribution (PSD) in the bed inventory which in turn influences via the hydrodynamic characteristics of the fluidized bed the performance of the chemical reactor.

 EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK
Union Carbide's hiring plans for 1999 are steady with this year's--between 25 and 30 Ph.D.s in chemistry and chemical engineering and between 60 and 70 B.S. chemical engineers--according to Donald E.
In fact, demand for chemists in some fields, such as synthetic organic chemistry, was so competitive last year that pharmaceutical companies were offering sign-on bonuses not only to Ph.D. chemists with the requisite skills but also to B.S. chemists with appropriate expertise.
Thus, chemists and engineers at all degree levels with expertise in enzymology and biochemistry will be on the hiring ticket, as will textile chemists and engineers.

Arvind has recently passed his qualifier exam and has demonstrated this approach on the optimization of steady state distillation column models where trays can dry up (i.e., obtaining solutions below the minimum reflux).
To test these ideas, a FORTRAN code has been implemented for the solution of dynamic optimization problems; problems with over 800,000 variable problems were solved in about 66 CPU minutes on an 800 MHz computer.
In tandem with the above project, we are also developing more direct sequential strategies for the solution of dynamic optimization problems.

SINGLE-SCREW EXTRUDER EXPERIMENT - Chemical Engineering Department Louisiana State University
The extruder is designed to: (a) ensure steady transport from the feeder to the melting zone; (b) allow for reduction in volume occuring as the pellets melt; (c) build up pressure; and finally, (d) transport the melt through the die attached to the extruder tip.
Extrusion involves transport and melting of the feed and pressure build-up and transport of the melt.
Assuming that the extruder near the die may be approximated as a cylinder of uniform radius R, and the polymer melt maintains a constant fluid density, a differential momentum balance yields Eq.

 Centrospazio/Cavitation and Multiphase Flows
Multiphase flow phenomena are relevant to many different engineering applications, both in the chemical, mechanical and aerospace fields.
The CPRTF is specifically designed for the direct measurement of steady and unsteady fluid forces on artificially whirled impellers and for detailed experimentation on turbopumps under thermal and fluid dynamic similarity: it is intended to provide flexible and cost effective experimental support to the design development of future propellant feed systems.
The capability of testing turbopumps under cavitating conditions is a major asset for the designer, especially in those cases (such as high load pumps for space applications) in which the pump operates at supercritical speeds.

Currently, Nikhil Arora is extending data reconciliation and parameter estimation strategies to both steady state and dynamic processes.
These approaches have the advantage of providing simultaneous outlier detection while at the same time yielding less biased estimates of the reconciled data.
This approach can also be integrated into a two level optimization strategy that alternately solves the dynamic optimization problem for a fixed mesh, and then optimizes the mesh in an outer level.

Furthermore, we analyse the question of non-linear Onsager relations by studying one particular set of evolution equations of the fluxes, and considering the fluctuations of the fluxes around a non-equilibrium steady state.
These relations hold if the irreversible fluxes (time derivatives of state variables) are linear functions of the driving forces, but the latter may themselves be nonlinear functions of the state variables.
Therefore, the Onsager relations may be derived either in the space of the classical (slow) variables, by using a spatial Fourier transformation, or in the space of the non-classical (fast) variables such as the physical fluxes, without need of any Fourier transform.
