Steam Detectives - The TV Animation Series
Narutaki's father was a revered detective in Steam City; now Narutaki and his butler Kawakubo continue the family tradition to help the Steam City police solve crimes around the city.
Just like any detective action hero show, there always has to be an antagonist, and the television series does not falter in providing a large crop of villains.
There are other villains which try to destroy Steam City for their own evil agendas, like the evil Doctor Guilty who tries to build the better megamaton to defeat Goriki.

DVD Verdict Review - Steam Detectives: Case 5
Although Steam City is powered by coal, and all the machines run on steam, this is mostly window dressing for a film-noir type detective series with recurring characters and ongoing character arcs for both villains and heroes.
The steam powered city setting does have other advantages: it helps to hide crime, and it gives the city an ultra-new, old-fashioned look that could result from a society that evolved based on the technology of steam.
The hero of Steam City is Narutaki, a "child detective," (he's around 15 years old) who is calm, thoughtful, and very good at what he does.

Asamiya's work on Steam Detectives is glacially slow, something I have complained about before but probably to little avail: he works on it as a filler between other projects, and I'd rather wait six months to a year for another good installment of Steam Detectives than wait a few months for a lousy one.

Steam Detectives is set, appropriately enough, in Steam City (just down the interstate from Nuclear City and Hydroelectric City), a sprawling metropolis in the style of Victorian London that is a magnet for an unending parade of colorful villains.
It took me a couple of episodes to warm up to Steam Detectives; the series initially comes across like a steam-powered Pokémon, its characters throwing their pet robots into battle with each other for no other reason than the sheer coolness of watching clanking iron behemoths duking it out.

I've never been a big fan of Kia Asamiya's artwork--the noses of his characters are just too big for their faces (in length and width), and it doesn't appeal to me. Steam Detectives doesn't suffer this nearly so much as other stories (Silent Moebius, for one), but the artwork is also simpler and more stylized.
