Complement: 224 Armament: 10 3” The first DIXIE, a steam brig, was built in 1893 as EL RIO by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va.; purchased by the Navy 15 April 1898; converted to an auxiliary cruiser by her builder; and commissioned 19 April 1898, Commander C. Davis in command.
She served principally as a transport on the east coast, in the Caribbean, and Canal Zone, carrying Marines, recruits for training, and drafts of men for other vessels as well as engaging in target practice for her crew and Reserves.
Assigned to the Special Service Squadron she steamed from Philadelphia 26 June 1905 to carry a party of scientists to the Mediterranean to observe the solar eclipse of 30 August.

Two steam pumps were on the deck of the Mahoning to siphon off water filling the ship's hold after it ran aground near Sheboygan, and salvagers in 1865 recovered one of them.
There were few brigs that settled on the bottom of Lake Michigan because schooners were the ship of choice throughout most of the 1800s, said Bill Thiesen, director of operations and curator of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc.
Brigs used square sails that required sailors climbing aloft to stow them, while schooners featured triangular sails and could be handled solely from the deck.

 BRIG Sterling Anchor at 2006 California State Fair
The BRIG Sterling’s anchor, property of California State Parks, was on display at the 2006 California State Fair in Sacramento, California.
Once reaching the city, vessels were abandoned by their crews and then stripped for usable materials which were then sold.
The Sterling's anchor was found at a depth of only 20 feet in the river, less than a mile from California’s Capitol building, during an underwater archaeological survey in 1985.

The construction began in 1911 between Brig and Gletsch and with the 1876m tunnel at the Furka pass.

The Erie maritime Museum-headquartered in a handsomely rehabilitated former Pennsylvania Electric Company steam generating plant overlooking Lake Erie's picturesque Presque Isle Bay-offers a window into early nineteenth-century America, revealing what frontier maritime life was like, as well as realistically depicting seamanship of the early nineteenth century.
For instance, a fighting sail deck, an actual working portion of a sailing ship's deck, is replete with mast, spars, and rigging.
This exhibit area, which fits with ease in the expansive former steam generating plant, enables museum-goers to experience what it is like to work the lines and sails in a way they would otherwise not be able, even when aboard the real Niagara.

The Tow Boat Hercules left this yesterday, and all the other Steam Boats (with the exception of the Laprairie, which is expected from Quebec after her last trip this season, today) have repaired to their respective stations, until the opening of navigation next year will permit their resuming business.

The second Niagara, a steam frigate, was launched by New York Navy Yard 23 February 1855; sponsored by Miss Annie C. O'Donnell; and commissioned 6 April 1857, Captain William L. Hudson in command.
