British Rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
British Railways (BR), later rebranded as British Rail, ran the British railway system from the nationalisation of the 'Big Four' British railway companies in 1948 until its privatisation in stages between 1994 and 1997.
British Railways came into existence on 1 January 1948 with the merger of the Big Four as the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission (BTC).
These locomotives were destined to lead short lives, some as little as five years against a design life of over 30 years, because of the end of steam traction on 11 August 1968.

Steam locomotives of British Railways - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
British Railways (BR) inherited a number of locomotives from its constituent "Big Four" companies, the vast majority of which were steam locomotives.
British Railways was created in 1948 by the merger of the big four grouped railway companies; the Great Western Railway (GWR), the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and the Southern Railway (SR).
Each locomotive class was given a number 0-9 that signified its power, 0 for the least powerful and 9 for the most, with a suffix of F or P, indicating freight and passenger roles respectively.

Railway engineering was not the only heavy mechanical engineering in the country though; in Dunedin, workshops developed considerable expertise in the manufacture of gold dredges.
While steam reigned, locomotives of many types originating from a variety of sources were used throughout the country, not only in the Government railways but also in industries such as timber milling, quarrying and mining, and in freezing works.
He was right for, although the age of steam would continue for another thirty years, with the advent of superheating the steam locomotive had advanced as far as it ever would.

Railways and Steam - Book List
When Britain's railways were nationalised in 1948 more than nineteen thousand steam locomotives were taken over from the private companies, and the manufacture of steam locomotives continued until 1960.
The steam locomotives which served industry spent their working lives mainly behind the walls of factories, docks and shipyards, unseen by most people, and only in the colliery districts and in the iron-ore quarrying areas of the East Midlands were they a familiar sight to the general public.
Steam power was first used to propel road rollers in the 1860s and thereafter there was rapid development, in parallel with that of the traction engine.
