Steamrunner class - Memory Alpha - A Wikia wiki
The Steamrunner class was a type of Federation starship in service with Starfleet during late 24th century.
Several other Steamrunner class starships were involved in the Dominion War, and participated in Operation Return in 2374 and the second Battle of Chin'toka in 2375.
The Steamrunner class starship was designed by Alex Jaeger at ILM, and was named Streamrunner initially, after a song by the band Fold Zandura.

ACTD - Advanced Starship Design Bureau | Steamrunner-class Specs
The class was originally designed as a replacement for the elder statesman of the fleet, the Miranda class, in the role of cruiser and deep space fleet escort.
The Steamrunner class was launched and quickly slipped into the role of exploration and, working in tandem with the Saber class, in the expansion of the Federation.
Ongoing Scientific Investigation: The Steamrunner class starship is equipped with scientific laboratories and a wide variety of sensor probes and sensor arrays, giving her the ability to perform a wide variety of ongoing scientific investigations.

 NX-class starship
In the Star Trek fictional universe, the NX class was a variety of starship produced by Earth Starfleet prior to the United Federation of Planets.
The pathfinder of the class, the starship Enterprise (NX-01), was launched on April 16, 2151.
The NX-01 is decommissioned that year, but the fate of the other NX class ships is not revealed; in addition, it is not revealed whether the new Warp 7 vessels also carry NX designations (it is possible that the new ships are the oft-mentioned Daedalus class starship, which was in use around that time).

 Saber class
The designers brought in many measures to ensure that the Saber class would be easy to build; like the much earlier Oberth class science vessels the Saber's design is highly modular in nature, allowing ten thousand ton sections to be constructed in small shipyards before final assembly in a larger facility.
One requirement was for the Saber's to have a science and exploration capacity equal to 85% that of a Steamrunner class along with equal cruise and maximum speeds - a measure intended to allow the vessels to work together in co-ordinated operations.
Like the larger Akira and Steamrunner classes, Saber's have largely served in the frontier regions and they have been an uncommon sight at the heart of the Federation.

The Steamrunner design was fielded in the early 2370s along with the Saber as part of a major fleet wide program of modernization and a reaction to the new Borg threat.
Essentially the Steamrunner's serve a similar function as the modern day Intrepid Class - a smaller, faster counterpart which would be deployed in large numbers to augment the more capable designs.
In December 2342 the USS Steamrunner is commissioned by Starfleet in a ceremony at the Antaries Fleetyard.

With the Akira and Steamrunner design projects well under way by by the late 2340's, Starfleet felt that it had cured the problems of fleet wide obsolescence and combat deficiency that had faced it.
In 2353 Starfleet requested a new class of Starship to complement the Akira and Steamrunner classes.
This new 'Norway' class was to have a 50% reduction in armament to allow two extra science labs, a set of ambassadorial quarters and a large conference hall complex to be inserted.

 USS Wonderlust Steamrunner Class Specifications
The Steamrunner design was fielded in the early 40s along with the Saber as part of a major fleet wide program of modernization.
The Steamrunner introduced several innovations into Starfleet; she was the first to be equipped with an isolinear computer system rather than the duotronic system then in use.
Her hull form was also rather unusual in appearance; the angular profile of the primary hull was claimed to be an inherently stronger shape than the traditional circular/elliptical shape, allowing a reduction in the thickness of the structural beams which decreased the overall vessel mass by some 12%.

 Galaxy Class Explorer
The Galaxy Class starship entered service in 2353 marking the crowning achievement of almost seventy-five years of engineering advancements starting with the Transwarp Development Project in the late 22nd century.
Galaxy Class vessels are the largest in the fleet, built to boast Starfleet's most advanced technology and show the Federation's presence as if a core member world was next door.
Even though the Galaxy Class was a relatively young class of starship, Starfleet and the Advanced Starship Design Bureau were forced to devise three variants on the Galaxy space frame.

Welcome to the Akira Class Technical Manual - Akira Class Technical Manual
The Akira Class starship is a class of Federation Starfleet starship in the Star Trek fictional universe, appearing first in Star Trek: First Contact and subsequently in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.
Ships of the Akira Class are large vessels composed of a circular, saucer-shaped primary hull with a low-slung navigational deflector and two beams rising from the top heading aft; the beams attach to an arch that supports two warp nacelles at its ends and a weapons pod that fires photon torpedoes at its zenith.
Like the Steamrunner Class, the main bridge, primary dorsal phaser strip and lifeboats are embedded into the saucer to provide for better protection from enemy fire by blocking against attacks.

 RACE:
Like the Defiant- and Saber-classes, the Steamrunner pulls its warp nacelles in, reducing their vulnerability by dispensing with the standard nacelle-pylon configuration.
To help fulfill the latter role, the Steamrunner, like the Akira, has a large through-saucer shuttlebay used to carry up to 30 Starfleet attack fighters and the other small vessels into battle.
Ships of this class played a major role in many battles during the Dominion War.

ACTD - Advanced Starship Design Bureau | Shuttle Specs
Ships of this type are currently in use aboard most medium to large sized starship classes, as well as aboard stations and Starbases.
Allocation of the larger Danube-class runabout to starships in the field proved too costly, and with the expressed need by the Sovereign-class development team for a capable shuttle, the Type-11 was born.
The Starship Spotter states the Type-10 can travel at Warp 5, so the other shuttles are rated around that number, depending on various factors.

 Steamrunner Class
Many of the prototype systems on this were a direct inspiration for the later classes, such as a new high yield Photon Torpedo, which were not introduced to mainstream starships for another five years.
Later, Steamrunners went on to excel with the new upgraded Quantum Torpedoes specifically installed for use in the Dominion war effort, and became a valued addition to any taskforce.
The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon.

Ex Astris Scientia - Starship Design Guidelines
Of course, the long construction time for a "real" starship is not an obstacle to the construction of a ship on a computer or drawing board.
Although this sounds nice, there are many starships whose nacelles are located at the very top or very bottom of the ship and have no undercut, so an "amateur" starship designer does not necessarily have to care about it.
In this respect a good starship design may be described as sleek and slim but compact, with the Galaxy class being a nearly perfect example.

As on most starship classes the Galaxy Class has set proceedures in case the vessel encounters a medical emergency which Sickbay cannot handle on it's own.
This breaks down to the density of the H Class evacuees being much higher than that of the N Class or M Class, and thus also reduces the amount of space available for any other evacuee groups because the N Class is taking up space that it doesn't use but cannot transfer elsewhere.
The reason for this is because the Yamato is specifically stated in the TNG TM as being the second commissioned Galaxy Class Starship.

According to the diagram in the new Encyclopedia (page 470), the Saber class are very small - about the size of the saucer section of the original Constitution class.
Given their apparent age - based on the relatively low NCC numbers - and size I don't think they are really designed for mass battle tactics and that could be an excuse as to why we've seen relatively little of them since First Contact.
In truth, I think the design is boring compared to the Akira and Steamrunner, and the creators seem to be using these ships more because of the generally positive fan reaction to them.
