Records from the J. Paisley Steamship Company and the Morrow Steamship Company were acquired by Bowling Green State University on July 9, 1973 and transferred to the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes in 1976.
The J. Paisley Steamship Company and the Morrow Steamship Company were founded in the early twentieth century to participate in the Great Lakes coal trade.
The J. Paisley Steamship Company and the Morrow Steamship Company were merged with the Oglebay Norton fleet and ceased to operate under their own names.

The first seagoing vessel to be fitted with a screw propeller was the Archimedes (1840); the Great Britain (1845) was the first large iron steamship driven by a screw propeller to cross the Atlantic.
By the late 1850s the screw propeller was conceded to be superior to paddlewheels, and the steamship began to supplant the sailing ship.

On Nov. 26, 1898, the Steamship Portland left India Wharf in Boston for Portland, Maine, on a regularly scheduled run.
None of the 192 passengers and crew survived the massive storm that wreaked havoc on New England's coast -- a storm that was later dubbed "The Portland Gale" after this tragic loss.
