Museum officials were stunned by a weekend slashing attack at Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art that severely damaged a Picasso valued at up to $7.5 million.
Museum and city officials reacted with outrage to Sunday afternoon's attack at the Stedelijk, which houses a world-renowned collection including five other Picassos.
The museum, which bought the painting in 1981 for $950,000, is insured for the damage.

In 1946 his first solo show was held at Het Beerenhuis in Groningen, the Netherlands, and he participated in the Jonge Schilders exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam.
He received the UNESCO Prize at the Venice Biennale of 1954, and was commissioned to execute a mural for the restaurant of the Stedelijk Museum in 1956.
Solo exhibitions of his work were held at the Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Paris and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1968, and at the Kunsthalle Basel and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1969.
