In 1979 Kronman went to the Caribbean and fell in love with the steel pan - a unique instrument and the only genuinely new invention in acoustic musical instruments during the twentieth century.

The steel pan was invented in the 20th century and is believed to have originated in the 1930's in Trinidad and Tobago where dustbins or biscuit tins were used in the rhythm instruments in the "Tamboo Bamboo bands" during street parades or carnivals.

During this phase of its evolution it as discovered that bulges on the bottom of the steel drum made different sounds and thus a convex shape was hammered out on the bottom and then small bulges of different sizes were made to produce different sounds.
