Steel Pulse have been perfecting their original and distinctly high-energy style of Rootz Reggae music for a quarter of a century.
Despite that, Steel Pulse's musical message of hope, education and activism paved the way for an invitation by the Clinton Administration for the group to become the first Reggae artists to perform during inaugural festivities in Washington, DC in 1993.
Steel Pulse kicked off their recently concluded 30-odd city 'African Holocaust' tour of the US on July 14, 2004, in support of their new album and played to enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews everywhere they went from coast to coast.

Steel Pulse initially had difficulty finding live gigs, as club owners were reluctant to give them a platform for their "subversive" Rastafarian politics.
In keeping with the spirit of the times, Steel Pulse developed a theatrical stage show that leavened their social commentary with satirical humor; many of the members dressed in costumes that mocked traditional British archetypes (Riley was a vicar, McQueen a bowler-wearing aristocrat, Martin a coach footman, etc.).
Steel Pulse moved on to Elektra/Asylum, which released an LP version of their headlining set at the 1981 Reggae Sunsplash Festival.

Billed as the first Steel Pulse concert in the capital for seven years, it was with much anticipation that the crowd gathered once the doors opened at 7pm.
Steel Pulse began with their intro medley that included brief snippets of Chant A Psalm, Bad Man, Macka Splaff and Nyahbinghi Voyage before rounding off the medley with an extended Don't Give In.
Pulse took to the stage at 9.15pm and though the audience was around 200 strong, they were very enthusiastic and the band responded in kind.

This is the Birmingham-based band's 15th disc in 22+ years of recording, and Living Legacy shows Steel Pulse haven't lost their edge: they still sing of political struggle ("Islands Unite") or the freedom to worship Jah ("Nyhabinghi Voyage").
The 14-minute "Medley Medley" gives Steel Pulse a chance to stretch a bit as they sing some of their more popular songs, such as "No King James Version," "War," "Time of Peace," and "Nothing to Declare." Steel Pulse still sing of revolution and social injustice, like no other reggae band on the charts today.

In recent years Steel Pulse has become a bit too automated for my tastes, as UK reggae groups sometimes do.
Steel Pulse still make some interesting music, but they seem to have strayed from the deep grooves that drew me to them in the first place, and I have to think a lot of people probably agree.
This is Steel Pulse as they were when they were often mentioned in the same breath with Jamaican artists like Burning Spear and Culture.

Any live music enthusiasts who may have been wandering by to see if it was going to be their type of show quickly found out that the air was going to be filled with reggae as they neared the door and the hot guitar scratching came flickering out into the cold.
Steel Pulse has been asking us to know our history for 30 years.
It was highly appropriate and rejuvenating then, that toward the end of the set, the band broke it down while Hinds honored the people involved in a convergence of anniversaries this year.
