The lap steel guitar is held in your lap facing toward you.
Typically the lap steel guitar is tuned in one of several "open" tunings rather than standard guitar tuning.
The slide guitar is typically a standard guitar, held the usual way, and fretted with a piece of metal or glass, typically a tube worn on one finger.

  Steel guitar at AllExperts
Steel guitar refers to a method of playing on a guitar held horizontally, with the strings uppermost and the bass strings towards the player, and using a type of slide called a steel above the fingerboard rather than fretting the strings with the fingers.
Steel guitar technique also developed from bottleneck guitar, which is a similar technique to steel guitar but with the guitar held in the conventional position, and using a different form of slide to accommodate this playing position.
The term steel guitar should not be confused with steel-strung guitar, which is a standard acoustic guitar that has steel rather than the nylon or cat-gut strings used for classical guitar, and is built with extra bracing, a stronger neck, and higher-geared machine heads to cater for the much higher tension of steel strings.

The Steel Guitar in Country Music History from Thanks for the Music Legends of Country Music
Steel guitars are a small family of instruments closely related to the six string Spanish guitar.
To make this easier, the original steel guitar was held in the player's lap, and the electric ones are often referred to as a 'lap steel'.
While the very first acoustic steel guitars had bodies much like the Spanish guitar, a special off-shoot of acoustic guitar, the resonator guitar first appeared in the 20's and is still popular today.

Somehow, the slack key guitar was not a big part of the uke-steel guitar boom of the 1st half of this century; however with the revival of Hawaiian culture in the 1960's and 1970's the slack key became immensely popular, moreso than ever on the Islands or the mainland.
Although the invention of the steel guitar style is shrouded in doubt, the first person to make a steel bar and to develop the standard technique was Joseph Kekuku, who moved to the mainland in 1904 and performed and taught until1931.
These guitars were not particularly popular with the professionals of the time, but were the next step in development; in many ways the steel guitar developed faster and further than almost any other string instrument in the same period.

Both lap and pedal steel guitars were closely associated with the development of country music, western swing and bluegrass.
A pedal steel guitar is typically rectangular in shape, and has no sound board but only one or more guitar necks, each together with its head and machine heads, and heavily modified.

The Pedal Steel Guitar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The pedal steel guitar is only distantly related to the more traditional Hawaiian steel, the big difference being the pedals.
Like its Hawaiian cousin, the pedal steel is played (in part) by sliding a steel bar up and down the strings, but that's where all similarity ends.
Because of the inflexible nature of the steel bar, it is impossible to play different strings in different places simultaneously on a non-pedal instrument.

Kika Kila - Hawaiian Steel Guitar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Steel guitar = a guitar (kika) with strings raised above the fretboard played with a steel bar (kila) manipulated with the left hand.
This style of guitar playing is said to have originated in the Hawaiian Islands in the mid to late 1880's with as many as three different persons.
Both are played with a steel bar; however, the tuning of each string of the non-pedal guitar is fixed while it is being played, while the tuning on many of the strings on the pedal steel guitar can be changed with a system of pedals and linkages while the guitar is being played.

One of today's most fascinating instruments, the pedal steel guitar was once limited to Hawaiian and Country music but is now respected as a complex versatile instrument in its own right, capable of interpreting all types of music either as a solo instrument or as accompaniment.
As a natural progression from the Hawaiian guitar, a stringed instrument played with a metal bar in the late 1800's the contemporary instrument has evolved in leaps and bounds with the addition of pedals and knee levers to raise and lower string pitches thus creating a unique musical effect.
There are numerous steel guitar clubs and associations throughout the world, staging shows and meetings to promote the instrument and its musicians.
