Steelband rivalry was always present and the first Steelband Association saw the need for channeling this energy into a positive direction.
The Carnival fetes were dominated by the steelbands with an occasional brass band in attendance and from the mid-fifties to the late sixties the steelband ruled the road on Carnival days from J’ourvert morning to las-lap on Tuesday night which carried revelers to the brink of Ash Wednesday and the end of festivities.
The Steelband is slowly gaining international recognition, although it is still regarded as a novelty and the very mention of the word Steelband still conjures up visions of exotic, tropical Islands, palm trees, sandy beaches and scantily dressed natives.

The steelband, steel orchestra, or "pans" as they are often referred to is a family of steelpan instruments, ranging from very high in the treble to very low in the bass.
Frontline pans - Instruments in the frontline section of the steelband are:- the tenor pans, the double tenor pans and the double second pans.
Usually the steelband is accompanied by other non-melodic percussion instruments such as the traps or drum set, the cymbals, the toc toc, to name a few and the very important 'iron'.

Rudolph Charles of the Desperadoes Steelband was the biggest innovator of new instruments when he introduced the nine-bass, the rocket bass, the quadrophonic pan, and the triple tenor.
In 1971, the steelbands convened to form a new governing body, Pan Trinbago, to replace the National Association of Trinidad & Tobago Steelbandmen which was founded in 1950.
In spite of the growing threat of compositions from panmen, Lord Kitchener's calypsoes remained very popular with arrangers and was the choice of eight Panorama winners during this decade.

The Tripoli Steelband goes back to 1942, where they took their name from the line in the Marine Hymn “....to the the shores of Tripoli”.
Hugh Borde who was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad in 1933, became the leader of the band in 1951, at the age of 18.
Steelbands were built around oil drums, left over from American Oil enterprizes in Trinidad.

Each steelband’s performance was individual and a highlight in itself proving the versatility and dexterity of the instrument and its musicians.
In addition to the steelband festival there was also extra entertainment provided in the MFO Park with lots of different playground rides and bouncy castles for the children and another stage for music bands and choirs.
