Steele City is noted for the large number of highly educated people that located in the town and adjoining country; also for their morality, or more strictly speaking, the large per cent of professed Christians, far above the average of new towns in the west.
The school district of Steele City is No. 1, being the first one in the county, established in 1868, before the town was thought of.
The Steele City mills, adjoining the north limits of the town, were built in the fall of 1881 by Joseph Stanley, under the direction of W. Hall, an experienced miller.

Steele City Exchange Bank: Built of brick and native stone in 1890, was originally the Harbine Bank.
It was purchased in 1895 by B.E. Pickering, and became the Steele City Exchange Bank on Aug. 5, 1901, when it was purchased by D.B. Cropsey, C.I. Clark, Chester Andrews and Hugh Clapp.
Clapp, who was later brigideer general of the Nebraska National Guard, operated the bank until 1915, when it was sold to J.S. Taylor and became the Farmers State Bank of Steele City.

She graduated from PSC in 1927, with an AB in English and began teaching English and Latin in Steele City, Nebraska, in the fall of 1927.
She continued her high school teaching career in such Nebraska towns as Auburn, Curtis, and Franklin, until the fall of 1934, when she returned to her alma mater as an assistant professor of English and advisor to the college newspaper.
In the late 1950s, she was also recognized by the Nebraska Council of Teachers of English as one of Nebraska's ten most important writers, a fitting tribute to one who twice received The Junior Literary Guild Award and spent her entire writing and teaching career in Nebraska.

This was part of a request that had been made to add 246 miles to the Nebraska Interstate system, and apparently was part of a planned Lincoln to Sioux City interstate as an upgrade of US-77.
The numbering along the Nebraska segment was dropped in the early 1980's, but the Iowa portion remains IA-165.
History and Notes: This route (at least the northern half of it) was mandated by the Nebraska legislature, apparently because the Dept. of Roads failed to build a highway in this area; the route number was written into the legislation.
