The Anderson Prize is awarded every five years to the person whom Council considers to have made the most outstanding contribution to the advancement of the purposes of the Association.
The prize was established by a bequest from Frank Maloy Anderson (1871--1961), a diplomatic and constitutional historian and a life member of the AHA, in honor of the memory of his son, a historian and public servant.
Prize deferred at the May 1980 Council meeting upon the recommendation of the Professional Division.

  Stony Brook University's Dennis Sullivan Receives 2006 AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize
Presented annually by the American Mathematical Society, the Steele Prize is one of the highest distinctions in mathematics.
The prize was awarded at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio, Texas.
Among his many honors are the AMS Veblen Prize (1971), the Prix Elie Cartan of the French Academy of Sciences (1981), the King Faisal Prize (1994), and the U.S. National Medal of Science (2004).

MIT Institute Professor Isadore M. Singer shares the 2004 Abel Prize with Sir Michael Atiyah for the discovery and proof of a theorem that is one of the great landmarks of 20th-century mathematics.
In years when awards are made, the prize winners are chosen at plenary sessions of the academies in the spring, and the prizes are awarded at a joint ceremony in the autumn.
Victor Guillemin was awarded the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement at the 109th Annual Meeting of the AMS in Baltimore in January 2003.

These prizes were established in 1970 in honor of George David Birkhoff, William Fogg Osgood, and William Caspar Graustein, and are endowed under the terms of a bequest from Leroy P. Steele.
From 1970 to 1976 one or more prizes were awarded each year for outstanding published mathematical research; most favorable consideration was given to papers distinguished for their exposition and covering broad areas of mathematics.
That cycle would have the 2008 prize awarded in discrete mathematics (discrete mathematics alternates with logic every five years), then analysis in 2009, algebra in 2010, applied mathematics in 2011, geometry/topology in 2012 and then logic in 2013, renewing the cycle.

The 1999 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement went to Richard V. Kadison, Ph.D., Kuemmerle Professor of Mathematics.
The prize, considered the American equivalent of a Nobel, was awarded by the American Mathematical Society on Jan. 14.
Kadison is one of the founders and leading exponents of the theory of operator algebras, a subject providing the mathematical framework for the basic structure of quantum mechanics.

Prize Director Scott Murphy established AMP to financially reward and increase exposure for an Australian music artist or group who had produced and commercially released the best contemporary music album.
