  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Stefano Infessura
Infessura was also for a long time secretary of the Roman Senate.
He was entangled in the conspiracy of Stefano Porcaro against Nicholas V (1453), which aimed at overturning the papal Government and making Rome a republic (Pastor, Gesch.
It is only with the greatest caution and after very careful criticism that his work can be used for the papal history of his time.

 The Life of Cesare Borgia
Stefano Porcaro and his distinguished following already in 1453 had attempted the overthrow of the pontifical authority, inspired, no doubt, by the attacks that had been levelled against it by the erudite and daring Lorenzo Valla.
Infessura states in his diaries that Roderigo desiring later -- as Pope Alexander VI -- to create cardinal his son by her, Cesare Borgia, he caused false witness to be borne to the fact that Cesare was the legitimate son of one Domenico d'Arignano, to whom he, the Pope, had in fact married her.
Infessura writes of what he heard, and he writes venomously, as he betrays by the bitter sarcasm with which he refers to the fifty silver cups filled with sweetmeats which the Pope tossed into the laps of ladies present at the earlier part of the celebration.

 HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH*
The statement of Infessura is difficult to believe, although it is made at length, that Innocent issued a decree permitting concubinage in Rome both to clergy and laity.
The prohibition of concubinage was declared prejudicial to the divine law and the honor of the clergy, as almost all the clergy, from the highest to the lowest, had concubines, or mistresses.
Infessura caustically remarks that Borgia distributed all his goods among the poor.

Calixtus' death was the signal for the flight of the Spanish lobbyists, whose houses were looted by the indignant Romans.
In things of this kind, says Infessura, the pope had his delight.759 He was elaborate in his vestments and, when he appeared in public, was accustomed to paint his face.
According to the Roman diarist, there were 6,800 listed public courtezans in Rome besides those whose names were not recorded.780 To say the least, the statement points to the low condition of clerical morals in the holy city and the slight regard paid to the legislation of Gregory VII.

XII Objit anno MDXVIII XXVI, Nov. And again, just as we know nothing of her family origin, neither have we any evidence of what her circumstances were when she caught the magnetic eye of Cardinal Roderigo de Lanzol y Borja--or Borgia as by now his name, which had undergone italianization, was more generally spelled.
Infessura states in his diaries that Roderigo desiring later--as Pope Alexander VI--to create cardinal his son by her, Cesare Borgia, he caused false witness to be borne to the fact that Cesare was the legitimate son of one Domenico d'Arignano, to whom he, the Pope, had in fact married her.
Now, bastards were by canon law excluded from the purple, and it is probably upon this circumstance that both Infessura and Guicciardini have built the assumption that some such means as these had been adopted to circumvent the law, and--as so often happens in chronicles concerning the Borgias--the assumption is straightway stated as a fact.

Stefano Infessura was born at Rome circa 1435 and died there circa 1500.
This turbulent spirit was entangled in the conspiracy of Stefano Porcaro against Nicholas V (1453), which aimed at overturning the Papal government and making Rome a republic.
His violent bias makes his “Diarium urbis Rome,” a chronicle from 1294 to 1494 (written partly in Latin and partly in Italian), of little value, as he did not hesitate to reproduce any idle scandal, and even to invent notorious calumnies, concerning such Pontiffs as Sixtus IV and Innocent VIII.

Probably the worst of these in terms of lasting inaccuracies was Stefano Infessura, who was a creature of the Colonna family.
No legitimate historians would think of citing Infessura about anything: his "Diary" is so erroneous that it would taint any work in which it were cited.
Infessura is not much on the web -- the Catholic Encyclopedia item on him is predictably dismissive, but it also represents the view of academic researchers -- a rare concordance: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08002a.htm.

His Pontificate has been severely criticized by those who forget that the Pope was a temporal Prince and in justice bound to defend his territory against the continual aggression of the Italian despots.
His private life was blameless, and the stories which were circulated by such writers as Stefano Infessura in his Diarium are entirely without foundation.
Sixtus was an eminent theologian, he is the author of an admirable treatise on the Immaculate Conception, and it is significant that he took strong measures to curb the judicial severities of Tomàs de Torquemada, whom he had appointed Grand Inquisitor of Castile, 11 February, 1482.

The chronicler Stefano Infessura's republican and anti-papal temper makes his diary a far from neutral though well-informed witness, but it is certain that though Paul opposed the humanists, he was second to none in providing for popular amusements, and displayed an extravagant love of splendor.
He is said to have had such a high opinion of his own appearance that he meant to take the name "Formosus II" ("handsome"), but was persuaded not to.

Also, whenever we decided that a Renaissance source was "good" (Johannes Burchard) or "bad" (Stefano Infessura) or that modern authors that used good or bad sources were "reliable" or "suspect", we were participating in historiography.
This often boils down to whether Renaissance writers were critical of themselves and of their own patrons (e.g., Guicciardini or Burchard) or were critical only of their enemies and the enemies of their patrons (e.g., Infessura or Cellini).
