Such is the case with Stefano Landi, the soberly titled but dazzling new release by the European ensemble L'Arpeggiata.
Landi joined the ranks of the Palazzo Barberini in 1595, began publishing his own music in 1616, and within two years was appointed maestro di capella to the court of the Bishop of Padua.
Landi paid particular attention to lyrics that suggested a dark side to their conventional, often frivolous, subject matter.

It looks into Landi's 'double life, the reverse side of life at court and its struggle for recognition...so we can discover in Stefano Landi's Libri di Arie pieces that on closer inspection lead the way into a universe all his own.
The liner notes establish a useful human context for Landi's music: Landi was an alto in the papal choir, job-sharing with Grigorio Allegri, and one of the many musical employees of the wealthy and influential Barberini family.
Also, Landi's arie are taken from a number of sources, and we are not told which works are from where.

Landi’s aria section concludes with a two-line refrain saying (transparently) that the bird has flown the coop: “The flbird has already flown away over the Po.
In the six strophes of Landi’s “T’amai gran tempo,” the fifth stanza represents the apex of freedom from his faithless lover that the poet has gained.
For an example see Stefano Landi’s “Aria da cantar sestine” in his 1620 book of Arie (Venice: Gardano, 1620; reprint, New York: Garland, 1986), which provides music in the equivalent of 9/2 throughout for Petrarch’s “A qualunque animale alberga in terra.” Each eleven-syllable line is set to a phrase lasting eight dotted semibreves.

Marco Beasley, tenor, thus added a personal view, dated Genoa, 25.09.2001, to round off the programme notes provided with a wonderful recording of works by a singer, harpist, guitarist and organist previously unknown to me, Stefano Landi, who first turned up in Rome as a choirboy in 1595.
Landi went on to become a teacher, part-time member of the papal choir, and rich patron's composer.
Like the audience in the concert hall at the end of the movie, we are outsiders, mere survivors perhaps, looking in on the edge of a place where hell strangely meets heaven.
