University of Cincinnati News: Anthropologist Finds Evidence of Early Humans in China
There are stone tool cut marks on the animal bones, repeated findings of burnt bone, and unusual collections of bones and teeth from animals like the Stegodon which could not have lived in the cave.
The cave, known as Panxian Dadong, was apparently used by early humans in southern China and remained in use through the time of Mao and up to the present.
She is doing a detailed analysis of the many Stegodon teeth found in the cave.

John Hawks Anthropology Weblog : Questioning the Flores dwarf Stegodon remains
The present understanding of the succession of Stegodon species on Flores is that endemic dwarfs, represented by the Early Pleistocene species Stegodon sondaarii (from the Ola Bula Formation and Kopo Watu), became extinct by around 840 kyr (van den Bergh et al.
Rolland and Crockford "wonder" whether there actually is any evidence for dwarf size in the preserved remains, whether they may have dated to times prior to the human occupation of the cave, or their assignment as dwarfs was purely erroneous.
Remember that the initial interpretation of endemic dwarfism for the human population of Flores was argued to be credible because of the existence of other dwarf mammals, principally Stegodon.

 First Mariners
Tangi Talo yielded the remains of pygmy stegodon (a type of elephant), giant tortoise, and Komodo dragons, but no tools.
Mata Menge, however, produced a small number of stone tools, including some made of nonlocal chert, as well as remains of large stegodon, crocodile, giant rat, freshwater molluscs, and plants.
A sample from Tangi Talo, taken near a pygmy stegodon tusk and giant tortoise shell fragments, yielded a date of about 900,000 years ago.

 Four-Million-Year-Old Fossils Found in Chongqing
Fossils of mammals four million years old have been found in this southwest China metropolis, including a stegodon tooth, a rhinoceros horn, and bear and wild ox bones.
A drastic change in the climate resulted in prehistoric animals like the stegodon becoming extinct, he said.
The fossils are useful data for the study of the climate, environment and geological conditions of the Chongqing area in those times, he said.

Stegodon Fossils Found in Southwest China
A dozen fossilized tusk fragments believed to be the remains of stegodon, or a saber-toothed elephant, have been found in Weishan County of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province.
A single rhinoceros tooth fossil was unearthed along with the other pieces of stegodon teeth.
Fossils of the ancient species, a large elephant that lived between two to eight million years ago, will provide valuable clues for study on the region's geological and climate changes in ancient times.

Experts with the Beijing Vertebrate Paleontology and Palaeoanthropology Institute believe the fossils date back at least some 15,000 years judging by pictures sent by the fossil collector Yan Shijie, a local retired teacher.

 Piltdown man
Woodward matched all the mammal remains from Piltdown to those in the Natural History Museum collections to work out which animals they came from.
With his knowledge of the fossil collections at the Museum, it probably wouldn’t have taken him long to realise these two fragments of teeth came from the tooth of a Stegodon – an ancient elephant that lived at the beginning of the Ice Age.
He would have compared the Piltdown fossils to teeth in the collections to prove his hypothesis.

Jacob's team contends that the initial studies, led by Peter Brown and Michael Morwood of the University of New England in Armidale, Australia, fail to explain how such small-brained people could have made tools previously associated only with the much larger-brained H.
The group also doubts that humans could have evolved in isolation on Flores, given that the elephantlike Stegodon was able to colonize the island more than once.
Moreover, the Hobbit detractors say, a number of the anatomical characteristics said to distinguish LB1 and the other specimens from H.
