		Based on per capita income, one of the more reliable measures of affluence, Steilacoom ranks 61st of 522 areas in the state of Washington to be ranked.
		Steilacoom was founded by Lafayette Balch, a sea captain from Maine, and officially incorporated in 1854.

		Three years later, on April 15, 1874, Congress approved the donation of 373.75 acres of Fort Steilacoom to Washington Territory for "an asylum for the insane and for no other purpose." Over the years, the institution's acreage increased, mainly by purchase, eventually to equal, and even exceed, the size of Steilacoom Farm.
		Sadly, when Washington's Department of Agriculture began to require that all milk cows in the state be tested for tuberculosis, all but five cows in the hospital herd tested positive.

	Captain Lafayette Balch
		Steilacoom has maintained its historic buildings and the house that Capt. Balch built for his brother Albert is still standing.
		In spite of an attempt by a neighoring church to remove the bell in 1889, it remained the property of Steilacoom.
		A wooden tower was erected to house the bell after the church was demolished in 1894 and in 1908 a stone monument was erected by the Washington State Historical Society and the Puget Sound Methodist Conference.
