From the days of Homer's Ulysses to the contemporary songs of Stelios Kazantzidis, who has died of cancer aged 70, Greeks have turned the pain of exile and migration into art as a means of coming to terms with it.

Kazantzidis was born in Nea Ionia, one of the refugee neighborhoods that sprang up in Athens after the destruction of the ancient Greek homelands of Anatolia with the end of the Ottoman empire and the birth of Ataturk's Turkey in the 1920s.

KICP Research Highlights: Hydrodynamical Simulations of Merging Galaxies with Supermassive Black Holes, Stelios ...
KICP fellow Stelios Kazantzidis and his collaborators are investigating the coevolution of SMBHs and their host galaxies using supercomputer simulations of galaxy collisions.
The simulations performed by Kazantzidis and his collaborators allowed for a considerable dynamic range to be resolved in the same calculation: from scales of hundreds of kiloparsecs at which the galaxies begin their cosmic dance to scales of tens of parsecs that correspond to the sizes of nuclear disks.
Nevertheless, the simulations carried out by Kazantzidis and his collaborators provide the first direct evidence that gas originally in galaxies separated by hundreds of kiloparsecs is collected to parsec scales simply as a result of the dynamics and hydrodynamics involved in the merger process.

Scientists elucidate the origin of the darkest galaxies in the universe
Using supercomputers to create novel simulations of galaxy formation, Kazantzidis and his collaborators found that a dark matter-dominated galaxy begins life as a normal system.
This mismatch, which is often referred to as the "missing satellites problem," has been traditionally regarded as one of the toughest challenges to the LCDM paradigm.
Kazantzidis' work suggests that the process by which small galaxies are stripped of their luminous matter is common, and implies that the "missing" galaxies could exist in the form of dark matter-dominated satellites.
