Stella, a 1955 Greek film featuring Melina Mercouri, is a retelling of Carmen, and is considered by many to be the most important title in Greek cinema.
Stella was originally intended to be a stage play with the title Stella with the Red Gloves, but it was never staged.
At the Cannes Film Festival, where the film was screened, Melina met Jules Dassin, her future husband, mentor, and director.

Stella’s sense of urgency to see and finally confess her knowledge to Robert, as conveyed within the novel, was not as apparent in the film.
Within the film Stella appears to be relived to see Robert but at the same time she is being rushed to the car and therefore, unable to depict the feelings and thoughts that weigh so heavily on her conscience (as depicted in the novel).
Stella’s face is pensive and her disposition is uncomfortable; through the viewing of the film, the idea of Stella’s worrisome thoughts and despair are reinforced.

 STELLA STREET
Originally a series of ten-minute shorts on the BBC, Stella Street is best when presented as comic episodes, such as a game of cricket down on the common green (with Nicholson as an accomplished player).
As the stars go broke, they are forced to reprise their more famous film roles to somewhat bored local tour groups, a scene that mirrors some of the actors' recent career choices.

Stella's desire (her sexuality, taste, and joie de vivre) is shown to be cheap, narcissistic and uncouth, and the film would therefore appear to treat female desire as a classically disruptive threat to these social orders.
Stella eats no apple, and the final shot of her is of her in movement, the sign, Rothman might suppose, of a different relationship to aloneness, one which accommodates it, even courts it.
Now the fact that Stella's otherness requires a space to be born is enough to supply us with the terms of feminism, since it is clearly a patriarchal order (also an order of class) that places her in the position of needing this space in order to be born.

Stella is still a teenager, still romantic in that you-and-me-against-the-world foreverness, while acting tough when the mood takes her.
She gives Stella a living reality that is both tender and wild, in control and so far out that she’s lost in space: a girl who is a woman who wants to be a girl, trapped in a runaway cycle of dependence and no-way-back.
