 TIME.com: Stella Dallas* -- May 28, 1923 -- Page 1
Stella saw that Laurel wasn't her kind— that she herself was the handicap on Laurel's becoming "nice." So she gave Laurel up in the only way that could bring a definite breach between them—let Stephen divorce her and married the wreck of an ex-society-riding-master, a worthy whom Laurel couldn't bear.
Stella Dallas is an excellently written novel dealing with a genuine problem—the problem of the woman who marries, as the Victorians called it, " above her station," and does her best to fit into her new environment but cannot, while her children can.
Stella is first of all a human being, not a type, and the same is almost as true of the other principal characters — even the somewhat pluperfect and superaesthetic Mrs.

Stella Dallas featuring Barbara Stanwyck & John Boles Movie and DVD page on ARTISTdirect
As the ultimate self-abnegating mother, Barbara Stanwyck endows her upwardly aspiring Stella with a potent mixture of crass fashion sense, hedonistic energy, self-aware pathos, and maternal love, while Anne Shirley's Laurel is visibly and poignantly torn between embarrassment and daughterly attachment.
Stanwyck's dignity gives Stella's sacrifice to the class system the emotional punch that it requires, as she memorably stands outside a bay window in the rain, watching her refined daughter finally get what Stella always wanted for her.
Critically praised for its superior performances, Stella Dallas garnered Stanwyck the first of her four Oscar nominations for Best Actress, as well as a Supporting Actress nomination for Shirley.

Stella marries Stephen Dallas (John Boles), a well-bred heartthrob with similar ambitions, and it initially appears they are on the path to social success.
By the time Stella joins the country-club elite wearing a white fox wrap, bells on her shoes and tightly curled bleach-blonde hair, it is hard not to agree with the snobbish remarks that buzz behind her back.
We sympathize with Stella, but more importantly, we are inspired to also whisper cruelties that mock her misplaced sense of taste and style.

In a compelling performance as Stella, the vulgar but well-intentioned mother who sacrifices so very much for her daughter's happiness, Belle Bennett accomplished some of the finest work of her career; Colman suavely effected the part of Stella's husband, Stephen; and Lois' portrayal of the daughter illuminated scene after scene.
In its 1926 cover story, Photoplay noted that because of Stella Dallas, Lois "needed only one part to make her a personage," adding that the film helped her to "win her spurs more swiftly" than other young actresses of the day.
