 STELLA STREET
Sadly such is the case with Brit hip parody "Stella Street," a movie that, as ambitiously comedic as it is, culturally and cinematically loses something in translation.
Based off the popular UK show of the same name, "Stella Street" is largely a three man operation: two in front of the camera in Sessions and Cornwell, and Peter Richardson behind it.
Directed in an unassuming style that mirrors the laid back sensibility of the neighborhood (at first) by Richardson, "Stella Street" is little more than a chuckling wink-wink fest of clever sight gags and sly wordplay that trade on the public personas of people who lead very public lives about which we know little.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Stella Street
Taped inexpensively with hand-held cameras, it was the first in a new wave of short-form comedies that turned up on BBC2 towards the end of the 1990s, a precursor to, among others, Lost In France and Marion And Geoff.
In the first series, the only non-celebrity in Stella Street to appear before the cameras is 76-year-old Mrs Huggett, who has lived there all of her life and whose job as house cleaner to the stars means she is privy to their many secrets - and also their verbal and physical abuse.
In the film, crime boss Vince Crush (Cornwell) and his moll Tara (Ronnie Ancona) swindle the Stella Street residents out of their fortunes, and the various music and film legends are reduced to eking out a living by taking menial jobs and organising tours of their homes.

Stella Street - Phil Cornwell, John Sessions
STELLA STREET, however, is an attempt to debunk this myth.
Boasting a cast of pretty much two—actor/impressionists Phil Cornwell and John Sessions, dividing the lead roles between them—STELLA STREET was the brainchild of Peter Richardson, whose hilarious half-hour mini-movies under the COMIC STRIP banner were one of the unique selling points in the early years of Channel 4.
Similarly acerbic, filmed in a rough-and-ready style, STELLA STREET predates and perhaps predicted all that, starting life as a barroom conversation and becoming a reality against all expectations.

The strenuous scenario: An otherwise anonymous suburban street becomes the residence of choice for a flock of celebs—Alfie-era Michael Caine, leisure-shirted Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman hoo-ha mode, Tattoo You vintage Mick and Keith, Bowie circa Let's Dance—who want to live normal, homebody lives.
The A-listers interact with the street's regular folk, playing cricket and whatnot, and you will begin to think about the nature of time, indeed of mortality, as sketch after sketch plods mirthlessly along.
A huge problem with the whole shebang is that the impressions (all courtesy Cornwell and Sessions) are shaky at best; with the American targets, a British accent creeps in.
