  Scientific Visualization of 3-dimensional Optimized Stellarator Configurations
A particularly convenient choice for stellarators (as shown in Figure 1) are the magnetic or Boozer coordinates [2] which allow the particle trajectory equations to be expressed in an accurate Hamiltonian form which depends only on the magnitude of the magnetic field and its derivatives.
In Figure 2 we display an outer magnetic flux surface of a low aspect ratio stellarator with color contours proportional to the strength of the magnetic field (light purple is low field, light blue-green is high field) and the trajectory of a magnetic field line is shown in white.
Stellarator transport optimizations focus directly on the dependence of the magnetic field strength on the two angular coordinates which span each flux surface.

The stellarator concept, proposed as early as 1951 by Lyman Spitzer of Princeton University, was initially researched in experiments in the 1950s and 1960s in the USA and Europe.
The difference is that stellarators rely entirely on magnetic fields produced by external coils to produce their magnetic confinement, eliminating the need for a toroidal plasma current but requiring a more complex shape for the coils than in tokamaks.
A stellarator is much more complex than a tokamak to design and build – only in relatively recent times have the theoretical understanding, computing power and fabrication techniques been developed to the level needed to construct large stellarators with a performance comparable to tokamaks.

Stellarators are magnetically confined fusion devices with confinement properties similar to those of tokamaks.
Unlike tokamaks, stellarators primarily use currents in external coils, rather than in the plasma itself, to confine and stabilize the plasma.
Large stellarator experiments are under way in Europe and Japan, and a smaller experiment is under construction at the University of Wisconsin.

The discovery of quasiaxially symmetric stellarators whose magnetic spectrum has approximate two-dimensional symmetry opens up the possibility of designing fusion reactors that have tokamak transport and stellarator stability.
Prototypes with two or three field periods have asymmetries almost as small as the coefficients for a typical tokamak that are associated with ripple from the toroidal coils or helical excursion of the magnetic axis resulting from instability.
This work is bolstered by recent stellarator experiments that have exceeded stability limits predicted by linear theory.
