This is another river in the Western Cape which has become the victim of urbanisation as the province's waterways are having to bear increasingly higher loads of waste, particularly sewage effluent and uncontrolled run-off from informal settlements.
She said much of the pollution was the result of the Stellenbosch municipality not providing sufficient sanitation in the Khayamandi area.

The town of Stellenbosch was founded in 1697 and from the date of the appointment of the first Landdrost in 1685, the local citizens or free burghers (as apposed to the employees of the Dutch East Indian Company) were organised into mounted and infantry units known as burgher commandos.
So it was decided that Stellenbosch should be allowed as many cannons and guns and as much powder and ammunition as may be necessary to ward off an enemy attack and that a suitable building for storing the material would have to be constructed.
In 1971 the municipality agreed to allow the Stellenbosch Museum to take over the building for displaying the museum's collection of firearms, cannon, military uniform etc. Serious difficulties were encountered when attempts were made to combat the problem of dampness in the structure.

The ANC-NNP-controlled Stellenbosch municipality has thumbed its nose at a Cape High Court ruling that stopped a controversial golf estate, hotel and housing development on the 267ha municipal-owned Paradyskloof property on the slopes of Stellenbosch mountain outside the town.
In the year 2000 the Wildlife and Environment Society of Southern Africa (WESSA) brought a High Court action to prevent Swedish developer Nordic Trust from building a golf estate, hotel and 550 houses on the property on which “there is critically endangered ‘Renosterveld' of which only 3% remains in South Africa.
But the town’s municipality (which is the seller of the land) has decided - without altering its development plans or putting the land out for tender again - that the developer should be allowed ‘another bite at the cherry' and to be given more time to re-apply for the original development proposals.
