I study the history of the Stelleroidea (asteroids, ophiuroids, and somasteroids) from their origins in the Ordovican to the present day.
Stelleroids are complex invertebrates that apparently have been important in marine communities since the Ordovician.

 Dictionary of Meaning www.mauspfeil.net
Somasteroidea {{Taxobox_end}} '''Stelleroidea''' is a superclass (biology) superclass of ocean marine invertebrates including three classes: *Asteroidea: true sea stars *Ophiuroidea: brittle stars *Somasteroidea (sometimes also Stomasteroidea): ancestral stelleroids Stelleroidea are stemless echinoderms that have a central disc from which five or more arms radiate.
This left five families and between 8-12 genera in the subclass Somasteroidea (Smith and Jell, 1990), as can be seen in the cladogram, based on Spencer and Wright (1966), McKnight (1975), and Blake (1982), shown above.

General agreement has yet to be reached on many points of echinoderm classification, as may be seen from the alternative classification to be found in different textbooks.
However, most workers divide the living echinoderms into four classes; Crinoidea, Stelleroidea, Echinoidea and Holothuroidea.
Radial symmetry in modern echinoderms has been derived secondarily from a bilaterally symmetrical ancestral form.
