The Stelvio Pass or Stilfserjoch, how it is called in German, is one of Italy's roofs with its 2758 m.
This is why one should, in case of ascending the Stelvio, consider the possibility of sudden weather changes: you can start with bright sunshine in the valley and arrive on the top in the rain or even in the snow.
Passing by the junction into the direction of the Umbrail Pass and Santa Maria, only a few kilometres and about 250 metres in altitude are left to reach the top of the Stelvio Pass.

The first half of the road from Spondinig to the pass is 27.45km long, has 48 hairpin curves, and gains 1900m of elevation.

Stelvio Pass greeted us with rain from the bottom, hailstone a little higher and snow blizzard at the top. The first to cross Stelvio after Glomser was Jšrn Schwarzkopf (Germany), shortly folowed by myself, Marko Baloh (Slovenia) and Paul Lindner (Austria). That all changed before the downhill.
My hopes before the race were high, but after I almost froze on Stelvio, almost fell downhill (because of a careless driver of a car), got a puncture and waited pretty long for my team to catch me and change the wheel, I was on the verge of abandoning.
By the foothills of Stelvio Pass (from Switzerland) his advantage was "just" 20 minutes, which is not bad, since I was almost an hour behind him 300 kilometers earlier.

The French say that a road at a small French pass is the highest European road, but a rumor says the French added truck loads of dirt to make their road higher.
This nice pass was a direct route to the Bergamo valleys (my area), and this road had little traffic.

The well known passes of my tour were: Colle Lombarda, Cime de la Bonette, Colle Fauneria / Pantani, Col de Vars, Col de Granon, Sestriere, Colle Finestre, Nufenenpass (CH), Grimselpass, Furkapass, Passo San Gottardo, Julierpass, Berninapass, Passo Gavia, Timmelsjoch and at the end the Gletscherstrasse up to the height of 2829 m.
From the austrian border I managed to cycle up to the third highest pass of The Alps: it was the Passo Stelvio, with it's 2760m high point.
The first serious pass was the Certovica, but on the next day in rain should we get known an unnamed pass towards Zuberec.
