Human power was focused by the use of simple engines, such as the capstan, windlass or treadmill, and with ropes, pulleys, and block and tackle arrangements, this power was transmitted and multiplied.
In the broadest sense of the term, internal combustion engines can be said to have been invented in China, with the invention of fireworks during the Song dynasty, with some sources putting this invention a thousand years earlier still.
For more conventional, reciprocating internal combustion engines the fundamental theory for two-stroke engines was established by Sadi Carnot, France, 1824, whilst the American Samuel Morey received a patent on April 1, 1826.

A pulse jet engine is a very simple form of internal combustion engine wherein the combustion occurs in pulses and the propulsive effort is a reaction to the rearward flow of hot gasses.
The diesel engine is a type of internal combustion engine; more specifically, it is a compression ignition engine, in which the fuel is ignited by being suddenly exposed to the high temperature and pressure of a compressed gas containing oxygen (usually atmospheric air), rather than a separate source of ignition...

Their engines are mainly used as gas generators for turbines, in ships or stationary installations, or as air compressors.
When Arthur F. Underwood and a team of engineers at the General Motors Research Laboratories put a free-piston engine in an experimental car in 1956 (the 250 HP XP 500), it was used strictly as a gas-producer for the gas turbine that provided the motive power.
First, however, Stelzer hopes to sell licenses for his engine to manufacturers of heat pumps for housing, irrigation and pipeline pumps and electric generator sets - applications in which no transmission problems are encountered.

The E202 engine combines the superior power and vibration characteristics of a two-stroke engine with the excellent thermal efficiency of a diesel engine, and it also incorporates a wide array of new technologies that help overcome the problems of conventional diesel engines.
This "engine without mechanics", presented by the IAA to the public in Frankfurt, Germany, is a propulsion technology immersed around solution, but the consequences are not yet fully foreseeable.
Stelzer also considers applying his engine as a motor for helicopters, cars, lawnmowers, and mining engines in the future.

Opposed piston - TheBestLinks.com - Diesel engine, Two-stroke cycle, Aircraft engine, Submarines, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
An opposed piston engine is one in which the cylinders are double-ended, with a piston at each end and no cylinder-head.
Opposed piston engines are essentially two-stroke cycle engines, as there is no cylinder head for the valves of a four stroke cycle.
Both the Jumo and Deltic engines used one piston per cylinder to expose an intake port, and the other to expose an exhaust port.

Cylinder-head-integrated diesel injection system with oil sensor - Patent 6880528
The engine oil 16 is fed in a known fashion via a filter and a line or an engine oil pump and corresponding lines to the locations in the engine which are to be lubricated, for example the pistons or the camshafts.
The dilution of the engine oil with fuel which occurs can then be detected using the oil sensor 14 by means of a change in the dielectricity of the engine oil.
If the control and adjustment unit 18 thus senses a change in the quality of the engine oil 16 or a change in the oil filling level 17, it can indicate a corresponding signal to the outside by means of a display unit and thus prevent serious damage to the engine.

System for generating braking pressure - Patent 4685298
With such an arrangement, the movable wall may be constructed very simply and very economically, likewise for the pre-assembled unitary valve assembly the fitting into position or interchanging of which may be carried out very rapidly and at minimum cost.
Now, the engine compartment offers a much harsher environment than the driving compartment, due particularly to splashing water or other liquid or solid contaminant particles from below the body.
Another aim of the present invention is to propose, for a system for generating braking pressure of the type defined above, a filtering structure enabling these disadvantages to be overcome and enabling the filtration qualities of the filter to be preserved during an extended life.

For the quite different concept proposed by Frank Stelzer, see Stelzer engine.
It has also been used for marine auxiliary generators and for larger marine propulsion engines, notably Fairbanks-Morse diesel engines used in US submarines both conventional and nuclear.
However some attempts were made to build non-diesel 4-stroke engines but as there is no cylinder head the bad location of the valves and the spark plug makes them unefficient.
