Crown group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stem and crown groups are hierarchical; thus, an extinct crown-group bird may lie in the stem group of a subset of the birds, such as the passerines; and stem-group birds lie, together with crown group birds and crocodiles and several extinct groups, in the crown group of the Archosauria.
A crown group and its stem group considered together are known as the total group.
Stem group organisms always lack one or more features that are present at the base of the crown group to which they are attached.

If the wings of both groups would be regarded as homologous one would be forced to assumed that all other mammals as well as lizards, turtles and crocodiles, have convergently transformed their fore legs from wings into walking legs, which would be a quite absurd idea indeed.
Groups that include a common ancestor and some (but not all) of its descendants, were often called "monophyletic" too (monophyla sensu MAYR or REMANE), but these do not really exist in nature (independent from human recognition), but are mere constructions of the human mind (logical classes), that are arbitrarily defined by certain characters.
Examples for polyphyletic groups would be a grouping of pterosaurs, birds, and bats as (hypothetical) taxon "flying vertebrates", the old taxon Pachydermata for a grouping of the thick-skinned hippos, rhinos and elephants, or the taxon Haemothermia (recently endorsed by LOVTRUP and GARDINER) for a grouping of haemothermic birds and mammals.

Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Research: Recommendations for CIHR-Funded Research - CIHR
Stem cell research, particularly on human ES cells, has raised a number of ethical concerns, related to both the source and potential use of the cells and has been the subject of much public debate in the media in Canada and worldwide.
Stem cells have a unique characteristic that distinguishes them from all other cell types derived from mammalian tissue: they have the ability to divide while maintaining their stem cell identity ("self-renewal"), and, in response to certain stimuli, they can differentiate to form more specialized cells.
Stem cells isolated from embryos at the earliest stages of development can be used to derive stem cell lines capable of indefinite growth in the laboratory and with the potential to produce all types of specialized cells.

Currently, the issue of stem cell homogeneity is a complication in all enrichment strategies, and is very difficult to rigorously address; given that in vivo transplantation is the only reliable assay for the most primitive stem cell population.
Mulligan summarized his studies by suggesting that a variety of adult stem cell populations may exist and have common functional properties, and that the ability of the different stem cell populations to give rise to particular cell types may be dependent upon local environmental stimuli.
Collaboration among research groups was identified as the key element in our ability to better substantiate this concept and to characterize the biological mechanisms that might drive the process.

Ad Hoc Working Group on Stem Cell Research - A Discussion Paper - Human Stem Cell Research - Opportunities for Health ...
Stem cells are cells found in developing animals and to a lesser extent in adults, that have a unique property: the ability to proliferate and remain undifferentiated (self renewal), and the ability to differentiate into more specialized tissues.
Stem cells have a wide range of "potency", ranging from embryonic stem (ES) cells that are capable of differentiating into all cell types (pluripotent cells), to stem cells found in adult tissues such as brain, muscle, and blood, that have a more limited range (restricted potency).
It is the ability of stem cells to multiply and develop into different cell types that has generated the recent excitement in the scientific community and in the media relating to their therapeutic potential.

Discussion: Cotton and Braddy 2000 considers the arachnomorphs with particular regard to the fossil stem group organisms, many of which are notorious problematica, and derives a phylogeny with the marrellomorphs at the base of two large clades: a trilobite clade and a chelicerate clade.

Genetics and Society: Past News: Nurses group opposes stem-cell plan
Though the California Nurses Association officially favors embryonic stem cell research, the organization Thursday announced its opposition to Proposition 71, the ballot measure that would fund stem cell studies with a $3 billion bond issue.
Leaders of the group, representing about 58,000 registered nurses statewide, said they felt the measure could allow private drug companies to patent discoveries and benefit from the research at public expense.
Thursday's announcement from the CNA and several other women's health groups places them on the same side as anti-abortion groups and the state Republican Party, previously the highest-profile opponents to Proposition 71.

Four groups of sites were identified on the basis of fish communities, water chemistry, and habitat quality: a San Joaquin Main Stem group, a Lower Tributary group, a Stanislaus River group, and an Upper Tributary group.
The San Joaquin Main Stem group was characterized by high percentages of introduced species tolerant of harsh environmental conditions, particularly the fathead minnow, red shiner, threadfin shad, and inland silverside (all referred to as the San Joaquin Main Stem species).
Thus, these groups are most indicative of large-scale, natural gradients and less related to environmental impairment than the groups obtained from the analysis of 20 low-elevation sites.

The stem cell institute was created last fall by passage of Proposition 71, which set up a 29-member board, known as the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee, to set policy and decide on grant proposals.
Meanwhile, stem cell scientists hoping to be on the receiving end of the grants are moving ahead with their projects -- assuming a solution will be found.
