Roy Andersson's "Songs From the Second Floor" is a collision at the intersection of farce and tragedy--the apocalypse as a joke on us.
Andersson is a deadpan Swedish surrealist who has spent the last 25 years making "the best TV commercials in the world" (Ingmar Bergman) and now bites off the hand that fed him, chews it thoughtfully, spits it out and tramples on it.

Andersson expended four years, a lot of his own coin -- some 36 minutes was shot before exec producer Philippe Bober came on board in '98 -- and the patience of his non-pro cast in bringing "Songs" to the screen.
Pic had no script and, despite its precise look, was unstoryboarded, with Andersson working out his ideas on set and through multiple takes, ending up with 46 scenes that form a kind of ironic commentary on the absurdities of human behavior, the crisis of 20th century capitalism and millennium madness in general.
Andersson's use of lenses is paramount here, with a depth of focus -- heightened by trompe l'oeil effects in the sets -- that makes background and foreground of equal importance.

Each scene portrays an instance of decay and social breakdown through the trials of a handful of central protagonists who suggest that they could have been picked at random amid the general malaise of modern existence.
Written and directed by Roy Andersson, the film is striking in its insistence on a static camera that records only one shot per scene, quite often in long and extremely stylised takes.
