A GUIDE TO TRANSFERING MODELS INTO STEPMANIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The biggest trick in having an effective and workable stepmania model is to try to keep the relative positioning of all of the joints in YOUR model the same as the model presented on the right.
Remember, stepmania as of 3.9 RC3 cannot read relative joint position, By setting up your joints normally in milkshape by using joints to connect in a relevant position will result in a failed joint structure and you would've wasted a lot of time.
While you could inject the model into stepmania cross your fingers and hope for the best, it is not the best way to diagnose what it wrong with your mesh.

After having done a LOT of tests, it appears it is the last fglrx drivers which are causing these lags: I've tested the game with a knoppix, with drivers 8.24.8 and 8.21.7, the first ones caused lags but not the latter ones.
I'm running stepmania with Radeon 9550, 8.24.8 -drivers, self-compiled 2.6.16.9 kernel, and I have no problems at all.
