 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Stephan Ladislaus Endlicher
Up to the time of his death Endlicher aided von Martius in editing the latter's great work "Flora Brasiliensis" (Munich and Leipzig, 1840-1906); the work, a folio costing 6000 marks, was finally completed in 130 parts of 20,733 pages in all, and containing 3811 plates.
It was through Endlicher's exertions that von Martius was enabled to begin the bringing out of this work under the patronage, and with the financial aid, of the Emperor Ferdinand I. Endlicher's botanical MSS.
Endlicher became involved in the political movement of 1848; he was elected a member both of the German and the Austrian parliaments, but his political activities were not successful.

Subsequently, Stephan Ladislaus Endlicher pointed out that it was dissimilar to the other species of Taxodium, and transferred it to a new genus, publishing the combination Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl.
In articles concerning the detailed listing or taxonomy of a plant, the date and place of publication associated with the authorship is added as well, but this practice is rare in encyclopedic or other non-taxonomic works.
The name or names of animal authors have their surname given in full, not abbreviated, while first names are not included, or if two authors share the same surname, are given as initials.

Austrian botanist who developed an important system of plant classification in which plants were arranged into Genera.
His system was especially useful in its division of the plant kingdom into thallophytes (algae, fungi, and lichens) and cormophytes (mosses, ferns, and seed plants).
Outlined in Genera Plantarum Secundum Ordines Naturales Disposita 1836-40, Endlicher's system was adopted throughout Europe for half a century, despite the erroneous basis for the classification of some of the 6,835 plants that...
