Stephanie Herseth (born December 3, 1970) is an American lawyer and Democratic politician, currently serving as the sole member of the House of Representatives from South Dakota.
Herseth was raised on her family's farm near Houghton (between Hecla and Columbia) in a family active in South Dakota politics:
Herseth was selected as the Democratic nominee for this special election and she beat Republican candidate Larry Diedrich with 51 percent in a close-fought special election.
