Stephanus pagination - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stephanus pagination is the system of reference and organisation used in the works of Plato.
As such, this system is often used to reference Plato - for example, Symposium 172a would refer the reader to the opening of Plato's Symposium.
This system of pagination is based on an edition of Plato by Henricus Stephanus (Henri Estienne).

Stephanus of Byzantium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stephanus Byzantinus (Stephanus of Byzantium), the author of a geographical dictionary entitled Εθνικα (Ethnica), of which, apart from some fragments, we possess only the meagre epitome of one Hermolaus.
Hermolaus dedicates his epitome to Justinian; whether the first or second emperor of that name is meant is disputed, but it seems probable that Stephanus flourished in the earlier part of the 6th century, under Justinian I.
The chief fragments remaining of the original work (which certainly contained lengthy quotations from classical authors and many interesting topographical and historical details) are preserved by Constantine Porphyrogennetos, De administrando imperio, ch.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 95.12.02
Stephanus of Byzantium has often been attacked by modern scholars for the artificial nature of the ethnics which he attributes to many sites.
However, Stephanus (or an intermediate source) characterizes Thenai as a polis and Omphalion as a topos.
I am only pointing out the problem that whenever Stephanus is our only source about the status of a community or the classification of a site, we cannot adopt his assertion automatically, because it might originate in the misunderstanding or alteration of an older source.

Stephanus responds that RCW 59.18.240(2)(1) expressly and unambiguously exempts evictions pursuant to RCW 59.18.200 from the prohibition against retaliatory action.
[1] We agree with Stephanus that the plain words of RCW 59.18.240 state that a tenancy terminated pursuant to RCW 59.18.200 is not subject to the prohibition against retaliatory eviction.

Stephanus began acquiring land between Croton and Peekskill from the Indians as early as 1677 and by 1697 his landholdings in this area had grown to 200 square miles from Croton Bay north to the highlands and east to the Connecticut line.
Stephanus Van Cortlandt became a man of extensive business interests, and was one of the most influential men of his time in the affairs of the Province.
According to family tradition, Stephanus' wife is thought to have visited the manor more often than her husband, making the trip from New York to Croton by water.

As soon as he was out of sight of Stephanus he drew a deep breath, stretched his limbs, and rubbed his burning eyes; he felt as if there was sand gathered under their lids, for he had forbidden them to close for three days and nights.
But Stephanus was calling him, and without hesitation he returned to him and replied to his questions; indeed it was easier to him to speak than to listen, for in his ears there was a roaring, moaning, singing, and piping, and he felt as if drunk with strong wine.
Stephanus was startled to see that his companion trembled in every limb, he raised himself and held out to him the flask with Sirona's wine, which the other, incapable of controlling himself, snatched eagerly from his hand, and emptied with frantic thirst.

Stephanus, then, knowing that, if he were convicted of having given in marriage the daughter of an alien woman, he would be liable to the heaviest penalties, came to terms with Phrastor and relinquished his claim to the marriage portion, and

Finally, he closed that speech with an attack on the character of Phormio, ridiculing his barbarian (that is, non-Greek) background and accusing him of carrying on an adulterous relationship with Archippe, Apollodorus’ mother, which resulted in the birth of Pasicles, Apollodorus’ younger brother (Dem.

Stephanus suggested to the trial court that he change the name of his business to Willows Court and, in fact, although not ordered to do so, after the conclusion of the trial he did make the change.
While we commend Stephanus for his belated effort to address the problem by changing to Willow Court, we are not persuaded that such action would eliminate confusion nor does it offer a basis to affirm the trial court's decision.
The case is remanded for entry of an injunction prohibiting Stephanus from using the word "Willows" in designating or describing his apartment complex and for the determination of reasonable attorney fees.

He had understood that she was the daughter of Stephanus and not Neaera, the child of Stephanus' marriage with a freeborn Athenian lady before he began to live with Neaera.
Phrastor was most indignant at all this, and considering himself to have been outrageously treated and swindled, he turned the young woman out of his house after having lived with her for a year and when she was pregnant; and he refused to return the dowry.
Stephanus, realising that if convicted of having sponsored the betrothal of an alien woman he ran the risk of incurring the severest penalties, came to terms with Phrastor, giving up the claim to the dowry and withdrawing the suit for alimony; and Phrastor likewise withdrew his indictment before the Thesmothetae.

Stephanus numbers are a standardized pagination system intended to make it easier to refer to places in Plato's Dialogs.
In some other translations the stephanus numbers are included in brackets right in the middle of the text.
We will be using stephanus numbers in this course only because there may be some people in class who will be using different translations or different editions of the Dialogs, and this standard pagination can let us all refer to the same spot in the text.
