Irish Christmas traditions are similar to those found in many western countries: the basic Christmas rituals, such as gift-giving, attending Mass, and decorating trees, are shared by most nations where Christmas is celebrated.
The popular Christmas carol, Twelve Days of Christmas is a remnant from the time when Catholicism was illegal and the gifts listed in the song are hidden references to Catholic dogma.

 Christmas
Christmas is the climax of a longer liturgical cycle that begins with Advent, continues after Christmas with Epiphany and the Sundays that follow, and ends with Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
Christmas is the church's celebration of the Incarnation, the supreme mystery that the holy and almighty God took on human flesh and was born in this world of the Virgin Mary.
This is also why Christmas extends for a period of twelve days and leads directly into the breathtaking festival of the Epiphany, the day and season the church sets aside to ponder the many ways Christ revealed Himself to the world as God Incarnate.

Attempting to get Christmas out of the streets, a group of New Yorkers - Washington Irving among them - led a movement to transform it into a new style of celebration that would take place within the secure confines of the family circle, and be concerned especially with the happiness of children.
And we are shown the child-centered Christmas epitomized by the family gatherings and gift-exchanges of the Sedgwick family in nineteenth-century Massachusetts and New York.

This scholarly analysis of our modern celebration of Christmas pulls together a thoroughly convincing case for the widely accepted notion that it is a 19th-century creation, indeed a deliberate reformation and taming of a holiday with wilder pagan origins.
Christmas was set at December 25 in the fourth century, not for any biblical link with Christ's birth, but because the church hoped to annex and Christianize the existing midwinter pagan feast.
Amazingly our Christmas tradition is based on the "Night Before Christmas" poem first published in a New York newspaper in 1823 and this tradition had taken its current form with all of its commercialism by 1830.

A Christmas Cantata is a work for four part youth chorus which was composed in 1974 in celebration of the Tenth Anniversary of St. Stephen's School in Rome and in honor of that School's founders, Rev. John O.
The narrated text is taken from the Christmas story as recounted in the Gospel according to St. Luke while the texts of the songs were written by myself.
It is fitting also that the narration is now read by the chorus members themselves, each bringing his or her unique voice and diction to the gospel text and thereby adding the unmistakable imprint of a truly international school.
