Bernard Roberts plays music by Stephen Dodgson, reviewed by Malcolm Miller   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Dodgson's new work, with its great sense of improvisatory fantasy and lyricism, was ideally programmed between Beethoven's two Op 27 sonatas and the Schubert B flat sonata D 960.
As Dodgson himself explained, the new sonata was commissioned by the Basingstoke Concert Club of which Bernard Roberts is also President, and for whom he gave the world première on the previous evening, as part of its fiftieth season.
In all Dodgson's works, including those for guitar and harpsichord for which he is well known, there is a strong sense of logical conceit, of structural balance and argument leading to some sort of resolution.

William Bennett & Jonathan Leathwood: CD liner notes
Stephen Dodgson’s Capriccio, at least, is unthinkable for any other combination.
It is one of the most rewarding of all flute and guitar pieces, not surprisingly from a composer who has been so generous in his output for both instruments.
Now approaching his eightieth year, Dodgson has recently been cultivating a divertimento-like style which takes the listener unawares by its capacity to move (his Concerto for flute and strings has been recorded and is a superb example of this later manner).

Concerto for Bassoon and Chamber Orchestra by Stephen Dodgson
Dodgson phoned me to say hello (I had mentioned this Concerto in one of the very first TTWB newsletters) and to ask if I'd like a copy of the music to his well-known (in Britain) concerto.
With the music now in hand I can inform readers that Dodgson, a prolific composer often for winds, has done the bassoon real service: a most interesting solo part and a varied and sprightly orchestral interweave.

This disc arises from Dodgson's association (dating back to 1984) with the Prussia Cove International Guitar Seminar (For such a Cornish event how surprising that the recording was made in Devon).
Whether in the relaxed amble of Promenade I or the more rapt reaches of Follow the Star (a fantasy on a Dutch carol) there is no doubting Dodgson's imagination-lit skills.
The plaintive plangency (the guitar is good at this sort of thing) of Pastoral (track 14) from The Selevan Story is instantly accessible and is well worth sampling to hear the best of this anthology.

It's convenient to pigeonhole John Williams as a classical guitarist, but a quick scan of his yards-long list of recordings exposes the limitations of the term.
While tearing through the usual suspects such as Bach, Scarlatti, Rodrigo, Paganini and Villa-Lobos, Williams has performed contemporary pieces by Stephen Dodgson and Richard Harvey, cropped up regularly on movie soundtracks (notably The Deer Hunter and its Cavatina theme), formed the classical-rock band Sky, and experimented with ethnic styles from Africa, Japan and South America.
