Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty-- Biography
Stephen was born in Pittsburgh on September 18, 1960, and graduated from the Cincinnati College Conservatory in 1982.
Stephen entered the workshop right after graduation, and the rest is history.....
That was hard for Stephen, though, because he came from more of a classical background and wasn't used to writing in front of someone.

Lynn and her collaborator, composer Stephen Flaherty, are as busy as ever preparing for the delayed Broadway opening of their show Seussical and for a reading of a new work at Lincoln Center this winter.
"Stephen and I were one of 8 or 9 teams that submitted audition material to the producer, Garth Drabinsky, and his company, Livent," Ahrens recalls.
Flaherty had always longed to be 'in the business.' "It sounds so clichéd, but I have always wanted to write music for Broadway," he reveals.

Playbill Features: PLAYBILL ON-LINE'S BRIEF ENCOUNTER with Stephen Flaherty
Flaherty, Ahrens and librettist Terrence McNally, who collaborated on Ragtime, liked working together so much that they reteamed for A Man of No Importance, a decidedly intimate, small-cast show about a middle-aged bus conductor and amateur drama director who comes out of the closet and finds riches within his small circle of friends in Dublin.
Flaherty, Irish-Catholic, fell in love with the world of the film source material, and the show blossomed this fall at Lincoln Center Theater's Off-Broadway space, the Mitzi Newhouse (where it continues to Dec. 29 with Roger Rees in the central role of Alfie Byrne).
Tony Award-winning composer Flaherty talked to Playbill On-Line's Kenneth Jones about the new work, which is likely to find its way into the regional theatre repertoire, and about works yet to come.

 Filmtracks: Anastasia (Stephen Flaherty/David Newman)
Praise Flaherty on effectively composing "Disney style" animation songs; the gigantic opening song with multitudes of voices sets a good mood, and the evil Rasputin's "In the Dark of the Night" is appropriately creepy and fun.
The song performed by Bernadette Peters ("Paris Holds the Key...") is the only annoying of the original songs, mainly because the French accents are so overblown (sure, it probably is perfect for the film, but it just sounds bad when they try to sing!).
Flaherty's songs are enjoyable and Newman's score is above average.

Sure, there are a number of significant exceptions; but, generally speaking, the tuners of the last 30-odd years have been more concerned with "concepts" and hydraulics and dark subject matter than with simple, moving love stories.
All of which may help to explain why fans of Once on This Island consider this gorgeous Stephen Flaherty-Lynn Ahrens musical to be one of the most enchanting shows of the late 20th century.
TheaterMania recently spoke with Flaherty about details of the reunion concert of a show that holds a special place in the hearts of a great many people.

Musical Theatre West Los Angeles Ragtime Review, LA Times
Already a certified classic, the 1997 musical "Ragtime" is an encyclopedia of small, exhilarating, just-right details as much as it is a sweeping panorama of American promise and heartbreak.
Its central production values aren't in its design or its "concept," but in Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens' almost nonstop score and Terrence McNally's deftly woven libretto, as happy a marriage of form and function as Broadway has produced.
It's gratifying to report, then, that Musical Theatre West's new revival puts its money where "Ragtime's" heart is. Music director Darryl Archibald, leading a shimmering pit band, lingers lovingly over the deep-dish cadences of the power ballads but gives the up-tempo numbers all the snap and swing they require.

All that’s left is a workmanlike homage to something truly unique and inspiring, and though this makes for a mildly entertaining evening’s music and song (especially for fans), it just can’t touch the heart and mind the way it ought to.
Simply celebrating thinks is not the same as setting them off, and at the risk of appearing a bit of a Sour Kangaroo (boisterously performed by Sharon Wilkins), you’d have to conclude that Seussical The Musical is doomed to play second fiddle to its source material..

Flaherty added recently, "We are waiting to hear when it might be produced [at LCT]." A staged reading of the piece in June was helmed by director-choreographer Graciela Daniele.
