Stephen Poliakoff was born in London on 1 December 1952, to a Russian-Jewish father and an Anglo-Jewish mother.
Foregrounded instead are Poliakoff's recurring thematic preoccupations: the thrill of discovering concealed histories and secrets; the secret aspects of places and family; and the potential power of documents (especially photographs and film images) to help us retrieve the past and its undisclosed stories.
Poliakoff 's penchant for elaborate montage sequences, odd juxtaposition of sound and image, and discursive narratives fitting more comfortably within the extended length of a three or four hour serial.

Stephen Poliakoff (born December 1, 1952) is an acclaimed British playwright, director and scriptwriter, widely judged amongst Britain's foremost television dramatists.
His brother, Martyn Poliakoff, is a Fellow of the Royal Society and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.
Stephen was the third of five very close children, all of whom have become eminent in their fields: academia, medicine and museum curation.

Poliakoff was born in Holland Park, west London in 1952, where he grew up with two sisters and a brother - and a Russian grandmother living in the attic, who instilled in him a continuing fascination with the darker and more complex shades of European history.
Poliakoff's paternal grandfather, whose life was the basis of his 1984 play Breaking the Silence, was a White Russian who survived the mass expulsion of Jews from Russia and the upheavals of the 1917 Revolution thanks to his technological prowess.
Poliakoff recalls that the only time the family was allowed to watch "downmarket" ITV was to witness pagers being used in Emergency Ward 10, although the invention didn't make the family terribly rich.

A recurring theme in Poliakoff's work is to place characters in a situation which causes them to radically reassess their own preconceptions and view of the world.
In Runners is a father searching London for his runaway under-age daughter, prepared to find her having fallen into prostitution, drug-abuse, or the hands of a religious cult, only to discover that she is surviving quite happily and legally in a city he finds confusing and bewildering.
One of Poliakoff's stageplay's which has surprisingly not been transferred to the small screen (although there has been a radio version) is Talk of the City, which presents an intriguing "alternative history" of the early days of television itself.
