In 1971 Schneider was second author on a Science paper with S. Rasool titled "Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and Aerosols: Effects of Large Increases on Global Climate" (Science 173, 138-141).
During the 1980's Schneider emerged as a leading public advocate of the (An increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere (especially a sustained increase that causes climatic changes)) global warming theory, in which carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions are held to increase the earth's temperature.
Schneider has commented publicly about the frustrations and difficulties involved with assessing and communicating scientific ideas.

Schneider discussed the challenges of assessing and communicating scientific risk during a Feb. 15 symposium -- "Tough Decisions: Dealing with Uncertainty in Managing Marine Fisheries" -- at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Seattle.
Schneider culled his examples from a different environmental issue, climate change, which he has researched for three decades.
Schneider first became interested in climate issues after attending a seminar on global warming while he was completing his doctorate in mechanical engineering and plasma physics at Columbia University in 1971.

 Three questions worth considering.
It's time to empower Americans to become citizen-scientists, Stanford climatologist Stephen Schneider said in Seattle on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997 during a session on science and democracy at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Science is both objective and subjective, Schneider said, based on facts established by experiments, but also on assumptions about what should be tested by the next round of experiments.
When he and his fellow scientists are consulted as experts, Schneider said, they must hold themselves to high standards and they must be explicit about the difference between facts, assumptions and values in the information they provide.
