With the death of Stephen Dusan (1356) the ill-consolidated empire of Servia collapsed: his successors were ciphers; whereas Orchan, the Sultan of the Ottomans, handed down a well-disciplined State, built on strong foundations, to a line of eminent princes.
The voivod of this country was Stephen Vukcid, and in 1448 he received from the Emperor the title of "Duke (Herzog) of St Sabas"; whence the complex of his lands derived the name of Herzegovina^ the Duchy.
A cry of mortification at the fall of this bulwark arose in Hungary and Italy, and the disaster was attributed to the corruption and cowardice of Stephen Tomasevic.

 Jajce - LoveToKnow 1911
Venice contributed money for its defence, and Hungary provided armies; while the pope entreated all Christian monarchs to avert its fall.
had seized more than 75 Bosnian fortresses, including Jajce itself; and the last independent king of Bosnia, Stephen Tomasevic, had been beheaded, or, according to one tradition, flayed alive, before the walls of Jajce, on a spot still called Kraljeva Polje, the "King's Field." His coffin and skeleton are still displayed in St Luke's Church.
The Hungarians, under King Matthias I., came to the rescue, and reconquered the greater part of Bosnia during the same year; and, although Mahomet returned in 1464, he was again defeated at Jajce, and compelled to flee before another Hungarian advance.

In 1358, Stephen Tvartko, a nephew of Louis the Great of Hungary, succeeded to the throne of the banat, and by his rare tact and ability added to his sway as vassals the Princes of Chelm and Zeuta, the Ban of Dalmatia, the Zupans of Canal and Tribunja.
His successor, Stephen Thomas, was the illegitimate son of one of Tvartko's rivals, and was raised to the throne by the Bogomils, to whose communion he belonged.
He used the wretched Stephen Tomasevic to the utmost, gaining possession through him of all those towns which had not already surrendered, and then caused him to be executed, with the most barbarous tortures, on the field of Bielaj, where he had assassinated his father.

In 1390 Milica, the queen widow of Lazarus, accepted, in the name of her child, that Serbia became Turkish vassal: it had to be paid an annual tribute and it had to be furnished troops for the war campaigns of the Turks.
In 1459 the successor of Tvrtko II, Stephen Tomas, conducted a hard battle against the Bosnian schismatic church and succeeded in reestablishing the obedience of the clergy to the pope.
In 1461, to his death, the kingdom went to his child Stephen Tomasevic, who asked uselessly help to the pope and to Venice to defend himself from the threat of the Turks.
