Stephen Watts Kearny (August 30, 1794–October 31, 1848) was a United States Army officer, noted for action in the southwest during the Mexican-American War, in particular in the conquest of California.
Kearny is pronounced "Kar-ney" (IPA pronunciation: [ˈkɑɹni]) and not "Ker-ney."
Kearny appealed to Washington, and upon receiving confirmation of his authority took command, having Frémont relieved and arrested (he was later convicted at court-martial, but was quickly pardoned by the President).

PHILIP KEARNY (1815-1862), American soldier, was born in New York on the 2nd of June 1815, and was originally intended for the legal profession.
He graduated at Columbia University (1833), but his bent was decidedly towards soldiering, and in 1837 he obtained a commission in the cavalry regiment of which his uncle, (General) Stephen Watts Kearny (1794-1848), was colonel and Lieutenant Jefferson Davis adjutant.
After six more years' service Kearny left the army, but almost immediately afterwards he rejoined, bringing with him a company of cavalry, which he had raised and equipped chiefly at his own expense, to take part in the Mexican war.

Even though Kearny's rank as a brigadier general was superior to Stockton's rank as a Commodore, Kearny proposed to serve as troop commander (under Stockton as commander-in-chief of the territory) in the campaign to retake Los Angeles in as much as most of the force involved were naval personnel.

Kearny was accompanied by a number of soldiers who later distinguished themselves in the Civil War, including his nephew Philip Kearny.
