Before dawn on June 18th, 1832, Captain Stephenson and 12 men from his company of mounted militia and several additional men from Apple River Fort took to the trail of a party of Sauk Indians.
Stephenson and his men were quite likely standing upon the rise of West Point Hill, one of the highest points of elevation in Stephenson County.
Stephenson’s men dismounted and crawled down the hill as close as they could come to the thicket, then rose up and fired a volley into it.

Not until 1827 did the aborigines quit the locality, and the county was organized, ten years later, and named for Gen. Benjamin Stephenson.
A man named Kirker, who had been in the employment of Colonel Gratiot as a lead-miner, near Galena, is said to have built the first cabin within the present limits of what was called Burr Oak Grove, and set himself up as an Indian-trader in 1826, but only remained a short time.
The earliest teacher was Nelson Martin, who is said to have taught a school of some twelve pupils, in a house which stood on the site of the present city of Freeport.

Carriage maker Jacob Henney came to Stephenson County, Illinois from his native Pennsylvania in the spring of 1848, but found the business climate not to his liking and returned to his family in Pennsylvania late in the year.
