Stephenville was formerly home to Ernest Harmon AFB, which was operated by the United States Air Force between 1941-1966.After the base was closed, the facility was turned over to the federal government which then provided it to the provincial government for divestiture to the local community.
Newfoundland itself was, and still is, considered isolated but during the 1940s, when roads were virtually non-existent and surface travel was limited to the slow narrow-gauge passenger trains of the Newfoundland Railway, which linked to small coastal steamships or ferries to the mainland at North Sydney, Nova Scotia, the sense of isolation could prove overwhelming.
Stephenville shares a municipal border with Kippens to the west and Stephenville Crossing to the east, connected by the Hanson Memorial Highway.

For Southwestern Newfoundland, the total score out of 100 for family and community indicators was 69.9, which is 3 points above the average of 66.9 for the first five UEY communities.
Despite low socio-economic status, parents in Southwestern Newfoundland had very strong parenting skills and were regularly engaged with their children in learning activities, factors which undoubtedly contribute to the community's success in achieving high levels on children's outcomes.

Air Labrador Flight 8300, a Beech 1900D, serial number UE266, was en route from Stephenville, Newfoundland, to St. John's, Newfoundland, when the right cabin emergency exit window failed.
At approximately 38 nautical miles (nm) from Stephenville, while the aircraft was climbing through 18 500 feet above sea level (asl), there was a loud bang, and both crew members experienced severe ear discomfort and the first officer experienced "dizziness".
The company standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the aircraft emergency checklist require that in the event of a rapid cabin depressurization, the crew is to initiate an emergency descent and don their oxygen masks.

Stephenville - The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) has signed a four-year contract with the Stephenville Town Council on behalf of inside and outside workers.
The contract provides a 50 cents an hour pay increase in each of its four years for a total $2 an hour increase over the life of the contract.
NAPE president Tom Hanlon said: “I believe this is the first time NAPE and the Stephenville Town Council have signed a new contract prior to the expiry of the existing contract.
